Emory Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at #17 Brandeis

The Emory University Women's Soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw with 17th-ranked Brandeis University on Friday evening in Waltham, Massachusetts. With the tie, the Eagles slip to fifth place in the UAA standings at 2-2-1, a game and half back of first place Chicago (4-1) with two games remaining.

Brandeis (13-2-2, 2-2-1 UAA) opened the scoring early in the second half as Cidney Moscovitch netted her sixth goal of the season. Moscovitch snuck a shot from 20 yards out past sophomore Dani Staffin and into the near post to give the Judges a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

The Eagles (9-5-1 overall) answered back 11 minutes later as sophomore Grace Edgarton knotted the score at 1-1 at the 59:45 mark. Freshman Caroline Kolski provided a cross from the right corner and Edgarton one touched it to the far post for her fourth tally of the year.

Emory had a couple chances to take the lead in regulation, both coming off the foot of Kolski. In the 72nd minute, the rookie had a wide open opportunity from 10 yards out but just pushed her shot wide. Three minutes later, Kolski had another attempt from inside the box but again saw her shot go wide as she had a defender crashing down on her.

After being outshot 3-0 in the first overtime period, sophomore Jordan Doak had Emory's first scoring chance in the 102nd minute. Following a hand ball by a Brandeis defender, Doak took a free kick from the top of the 18 but pushed her shot just over the crossbar. In the 108th minute, sophomore Nikki Batt had another free kick opportunity for the Eagles but her shot was blocked by the Judges' wall. Edgarton corralled the rebound and put a shot towards the net but her chance went wide of the far post.

Brandeis had the best attempt for either team in the extra sessions as Hannah Maatallah fired a shot after a scramble in the middle of the box but her shot just missed the near post in the 109th minute.

The Judges outshot the Eagles 19-14 in the contest but both squad recorded four attempts each in overtime. Edgarton led all Emory players with four shots in the contest. Alexis Grossman made four stops for the Judges while Staffin collected three saves for the Eagles.

Emory will be back in action on Sunday as the Eagles take on the Violets of New York University at 11:00 AM.
