Women's Soccer Earns First UAA Win; Shutouts #22/16 Brandeis 3-0

The Emory University Women's Soccer team earned its first University Athletic Association win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating #22/16 Brandeis University, 3-0, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

The Eagles ruled possession as they handed Brandeis just its second loss of the year, recording a 26-7 advantage in total shots and a 12-3 margin in shots on target. Juniors Madison Phaneuf and Abbe McCarter paced Emory with five shots each with Phaneuf registering a team-high three shots on goal.

Despite firing 13 shots in the opening half, Emory went into the break tied at 0-0 with the Judges. Brandeis, however, saw their starting goalkeeper forced to leave the game with a knee injury in the early stages of the second half, making the Judges go to their emergency backup keeper, Minjee Lee, for the final 43:17 and the Eagles took advantage.

Sophomore Shivani Beall led off the scoring, notching her second goal of the year in the 54th minute. Beall received a throw-in by junior Danielle Darius inside the box. Beall dribbled to the top of the 18 to get around a Brandeis defender and put a shot on net. Lee initially saved it but the ball trickled across the goal line, giving Emory a 1-0 lead.

Darius found the scoring column seven minutes later as she headed in a loose ball from close range for her third marker of the season. Freshman Lily Dresner sent a free kick inside the six where classmate Anne Otterbein played it off her chest towards Darius who finished it for the score.

Senior Melissa Ardizzone rounded out the scoring for the Eagles in 82nd minute. After fellow senior Kaitlyn Dorka was denied on three consecutive attempts, Ardizzone lofted the rebound to the far post for her first goal of the season.

Emory closes out its three-game home stand next Saturday, October 21st with a non-conference matchup against Roanoke College. Game time is set for 1:00 PM at the WoodPEC.
