The Piedmont College Lions scored with under two minutes remaining in regulation to hand the Emory University Women's Soccer team the 1-0 defeat Thursday night in Demorest, GA.
Piedmont's Anslyn Stamps set up the game-winning strike with a touch back to the Lions' zone off sophomore Haley Pratt's boot up field. PC's Savannah Castles won the race to the loose ball against junior Danielle Darius then with a nice cut back move, launched the game-winning shot to the far corner from 20 yards away out.
The shot by the Lions was the only one the Eagles allowed on frame in the contest as Emory finished with a 12-3 margin in shots and 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Melissa Ardizzone had one of the Eagles' first scoring threats late in the first half as a centering pass hit Ardizzone at the penalty spot but she pushed a shot just wide of the left post. Sophomore Paige Santee almost put Emory on the scoreboard in the second half with a header on target but her shot attempt was saved by Miranda McNalley. Ardizzone tallied three shots in the contest to lead both teams.
The Eagles return to Atlanta on Saturday for the regular season finale against the University of Rochester. Prior to the start of the game at 1:30 PM, Emory will recognize its six-member senior class – Melinda Altamore, Ardizzone, Kaitlyn Dorka, Lizzie Garrett-Currie, Anna Gurney and Bahar Ulusan with a special on-field ceremony
