Comeback Falls Short for Emory Women's Soccer Against No. 18/5 Chicago

A late second half comeback fell short Saturday afternoon as the Emory University Women's Soccer team was upended by No. 18/5 University of Chicago, 3-2, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Two goals during the final 10 minutes of play brought the Eagles to within one goal of the visiting Maroons but Emory was unable to find the equalizer despite several chances in the closing minutes including a header attempt on target with under 20 seconds remaining. The loss drops the Eagles to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in UAA play while Chicago improves to 10-1-1 and 2-0 in conference matches.

Sophomores Samantha Hilsee and Caroline Moore scored within a minute of each other to slice the Chicago lead to 3-2 in the 83rd minute. Hilsee ended the shutout with her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 82nd, scoring from long range on the give-and-go with freshman Lindsey Breskow. Moore cashed in 61 seconds later, knocking in the rebound following the scoring opportunity by senior Madison Phaneuf.

Sophomore Lily Dresner had the final scoring chance for the Eagles, putting a header on goal in the waning seconds following a long range free kick by senior Nikki Batt that was stopped by UC's Miranda Malone.

Chicago got out to the early lead as Rachel Diaz scored just 2:41 minutes into the opening half. The Maroons would double their lead before halftime as Mackenzie Peebles converted on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. The score remained 2-0 until Nikola Charouzova fired one to the far corner from the top of the 18 off the feed by Peyton Jefferson. For the game, Chicago outshot Emory 19-16 but the Eagles had 11 shots on net compared to the Maroons' 10.

Emory returns to action Tuesday night as it hosts Maryville College under the lights at the Woodruff PE Center. Play is set to begin at 7:30 PM.
