Women's Soccer Falls on the Road at No.-4 Christopher Newport

The Emory University women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season Saturday evening, falling to No.-4 ranked Christopher Newport University, 2-0, in the CNU Captains Invite in Newport News, Virginia.

Two second half goals was the difference in the contest as the Eagles slipped to 1-1 on the year while the Captains improved to 4-0. The Eagles won the shots battle 23-17 with CNU leading 8-7 in shots on goal and 7-5 in corner kicks.

Each team had one strong chance to take the lead in the opening stanza with senior Caroline Kolski being denied from point blank range in the 12th minute and CNU's Emily Talotta drilling the crossbar from 25 yards out in the 28th.

The Eagles had another point blank opportunity in the early stages of the second half as freshman Aubrey Blanchard was 1-on-1 with the CNU keeper but was denied.

The Captains broke the scoreless tie in the 59th minute as a ricochet off a blocked shot found its way to Jessica Zimmerman who slotted it past sophomore keeper Emma Platt. CNU tacked on one more marker in the 75th as Jill McDonald headed in corner kick to the near post.

Blanchard had one of the final scoring chances for the Eagles in the 84th as her attempt smacked the crossbar before going out of play.

Kolski paced the Eagles with six total shots including two on target with Blanchard and classmate Samantha Agnew added four shots, two on target, apiece.

Emory looks to rebound next Saturday as the Eagles host 11th-ranked University of Lynchburg in a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round matchup. Kickoff from the WoodPEC is set for 11:00 AM.
