The No.-25 ranked Emory University women's soccer team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon, falling to the No-14 ranked Centre College Colonels, 1-0, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.
The Eagles controlled possession for a majority of the match, outshooting the visiting Colonels 20-12 including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal but were held scoreless for just the second time this season. Centre improves to 12-0 with the victory while the Eagles drop to 5-2.
A goal by Centre's Sarah Sirkin in the 17th minute proved to be the difference in the evenly contested match. Sirkin was able to move around a defender inside the box following the throw-in before volleying in a shot to the far post over senior Haley Pratt.
The Eagles applied heavy pressure in the second half, outshooting the Colonels 12-2 across the final 45 minutes but could not find the equalizer.
Emory threatened with back-to-back opportunities in the 60th and 61st minute. First, sophomore Lindsey Breskow put a lofting shot on net but sailed just over top of the crossbar. Moments later, senior Caroline Kolski tried for a narrow window between the goalkeeper and near post but her shot was just outside as she hit the outside netting.
In the 72nd, the Eagles had their best chance of the match as senior Shivani Beall sent a centering cross into the box where freshman Aubrey Blanchard got her body on it and sent it towards the goal line. The Eagles did not get the favorable bounce on the play before a Centre defender was able to clear it.
The Colonels' Jonelle Barron made eight saves total in the match as she remained unbeaten between the posts while Pratt made five saves as she dropped to 5-1.
Emory looks to rebound tomorrow, Sunday, September 29th, with a meeting with Rhodes College at the WoodPEC at 2:30 PM.
