Women's Soccer Nets Four First Half Goals to Down Roanoke

The No. 20 ranked Emory University women's soccer team scored early and often on its way to a 4-0 victory against Roanoke College Friday evening in Atlanta, GA.

The Eagles scored all four goals in the first half including firing the opening salvo just 34 seconds into the game as the team won its third consecutive match, improving to 11-3-1 overall. With the loss, the Maroons dropped to 8-5-1 overall.

Once again the Eagles struck first before the opposing team had a chance to get settled, this time seeing senior Samantha Hilsee scoring the fastest goal for Emory this season and the fifth-fastest goal in program history. Sophomore Grace Reyer slid a pass to the middle allowing Hilsee to finish from distance over the leaping goalkeeper. The goal was Hilsee's sixth of the season, moving her into a tie for the team lead.

The Eagles struck again in the 23rd minute as junior Peyton Robertson knocked in a loose ball following a corner kick for her second goal of the year. Less than seven minutes later, senior Brooke Tylka notched her second goal of 2021 as she curved in a shot from long range off the assist from classmate Molly Miller.

Sophomore Olivia Friedman capped off the scoring in the 35th minute as she outran several defenders before beating the Roanoke keeper to the far post for third goal of the year.

Emory outshot the Maroons 29-7 in the win and had a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Eagles also earned 14 corner kicks, their second-highest total of the season.

Three Emory goalkeepers: senior Emma Platt, junior Emma Miller and sophomore Maddy Schulte combined for the team's ninth shutout with Miller making all four saves.

The Eagles are back with UAA competition next weekend with road trips to Brandeis University and NYU on October 29th and 31st.
