Women's Swimming & Diving Extend NCAA Lead Behind Three National Championships

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving team claimed three event national championships, rewriting the Division III record books in two events, Thursday night on day two of the NCAA Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

Another dominant showing on Thursday has extended Emory's overall lead heading into the final two days of competition. The Eagles now lead the rest of the field by over 100 points with 330 total. In second place sits Williams College with 225 points followed by Kenyon College (208) and Denison (175).

Emory opened the evening session with sophomores Fiona Muir, Meg Taylor and seniors Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe and Marissa Bergh defending their 200 Freestyle Relay crown winning the event in a time of 1:30.52, breaking the previous Division III record.

Junior Cindy Cheng followed three events later, taking home her first individual title of her career in the 200 Freestyle. She edged out Muir and defending champion junior Julia Wawer in the championship final. Cheng touched in a school record setting time of 1:46.82 with Muir placing second at 1:47.78 and Wawer in fifth at 1:49.26.

The group of Cheng, Sanchez-Aizcorbe, Muir and senior Annelise Kowalsky rounded out the evening by winning the 400 Medley Relay national title in record setting fashion. The quartet posted a time of 3:39.57 in the championship final, breaking the previous Division III national record.

Sanchez-Aizcorbe was one of four additional Eagles to earn All-America honors on the evening as she finished sixth overall in 100 Butterfly at 54.96. Junior Megan Campbell was third in the 100 Fly in a time of 54.80. In the 400 IM, sophomore Julia Durmer placed second overall in a time of 4:18.13 with junior Ming Ong finishing fourth at 4:23.19. Bergh added Honorable Mention All-America honors, finishing 16th overall in the 200 Free with a time of 1:52.65.

The NCAA Championships continue on Friday with the 200 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke and the 800 Freestyle Relay. Preliminaries start at 11:00 AM EST with the finals to follow at 7:00 PM EST.
