Cindy Cheng Breaks 200 Backstroke Record on Final Day of Miami Invitational

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving team took home another four event wins, 13 NCAA B Cuts and saw one school record fall as competition came to a close at the Miami Invitational Saturday night in Oxford, OH.

The Eagles finished in second place with 834 points on the strength of 10 event victories and 38 NCAA B Cut times. The host institution for the three day meet, Miami University, won the meet with a total of 1,480 points. Denison University was third at 728 points to round out the top three.

Senior Cindy Cheng sore to new heights on the evening as she broke her own school record in the 200 Backstroke to lead the Eagles on Saturday. Cheng registered a 1:56.63 to claim her third individual event title of the weekend, breaking her previous top mark of 1:57.26 that she set at least year's Miami Invitational. Her Saturday mark also represented a new meet record.

Cheng was also part of Emory's 400 Freestyle Relay win on the night, teaming with juniors Fiona Muir, Meg Taylor and freshman Lucy Daro for a winning time of 3:22.68. The Eagles' B relay unit notch a NCAA qualifying mark as well in the event as seniors Julia Wawer, Ming Ong, junior Hannah Baratz and freshman Rachel Song swam to a 3:29.52 during the morning session.

Muir captured her first individual event victory of the meet, taking top honors in the 100 Free to lead five Emory swimmers who finished inside the top-10. Muir clocked in at 50.15 followed by Taylor (2nd, 51.29), Daro (4th, 51.39), Ong (5th, 51.41) and Wawer (10th, 51.13). Sophomore Caroline Olson added a NCAA B Cut in the event, recording a time of 51.55 in prelims.

Junior Julia Durmer scored her second individual event title of the meet as she led Saturday off with a win in the 1,650 Freestyle. Durmer swam to a 16:36.20, narrowly edging out Miami's Emma Bradley by 0.67 seconds.

Adding NCAA B Cuts for the Eagles on Saturday were junior Ashley Daniels (4th, 2:18.07) and Durmer (9th, 2:19.60 prelims) in the 200 Breaststroke and sophomore Maria Turcan in the 200 Butterfly (5th, 2:05.04).

Emory will be on a brief hiatus for final exams and the holidays before returning to the pool on January 12th for a dual meet at Florida Southern.
