Ono Wins 100 Backstroke, Eagles Net Three NCAA B Cuts in Dual Meet Action at Georgia Tech

The Emory University Swimming and Diving teams were in action Saturday afternoon at the McAuley Aquatic Center as the Eagles squared off against Georgia Tech in the second-to-last dual meet of the 2017-18 season.

Emory posted one event win and three NCAA B Cut times as the Yellow Jackets swept the meet by scores of 150-82 on the women's side and 162-56 on the men's.

Sophomore Sage Ono registered the event win for the Eagles as he recorded the lone sub-50 seconds time in the event, touching with a NCAA qualifying mark of 49.91. Junior Thomas Gordon netted the other NCAA B Cut for the men, finishing third in the 1,650 Freestyle at 16:16.24. Senior Phoebe Edwards turned in the only NCAA B time for the women as she placed second in the 1,650 Freestyle with a time of 17:18.27.

The Emory women added five top-three finishes at the meet in addition to Edwards including a trio of second place efforts: senior Cindy Cheng in the 200 Freestyle (1:54.23), junior Fiona Muir in the 50 Freestyle (24.21) and Muir, freshman Lucy Daro, sophomore Caroline Olson and senior Ming Ong in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:37.64). Ong and junior Ashley Daniels recorded third place showings with Ong in the 500 Freestyle (5:11.93) and Daniels in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.59).

For the Emory men, senior Oliver Smith touched second in the 50 Freestyle at 20.39 and was part of a pair of relays which finished inside the top-three. The 200 Freestyle Relay of Ono, Smith, junior Trey Kolleck and senior Aaron Schwartz was second in the event at 1:22.56 while the 200 Medley Relay consisting of Ono, Smith, Kolleck and senior Cooper Tollen finished third in a time of 1:33.18.

The Eagles face another foe from the Division I ranks next Saturday, February 3rd as Emory travels to Athens, GA to face the University of Georgia in the last tune up before the UAA Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.
