Cindy Cheng Wins 200 Freestyle as Eagles Extend NCAA Lead

Nine All-America finishes including another national championship highlighted day two of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships for the Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving program as the Eagles extended their lead over the rest of the field.

Through two days of action, Emory has built a 64-point lead with 318 team points. Williams sits in second at 254 with Kenyon in third at 243.

Senior Cindy Cheng secured her first individual national title of the meet, successfully defending her 200 Freestyle championship. Cheng outlasted teammate Fiona Muir to win the event with a time of 1:46.89. Muir, the 50 Freestyle champion on Wednesday, recorded her second straight national runner-up performance in the 200, touching in a time of 1:47.64.

Emory registered an additional six individual All-America finishes on the evening and a pair of Honorable Mentions. Senior Ming Ong paced an Emory trio in the top-six of the 400 IM, placing second at 4:19.80 while junior Julia Durmer was fourth in a time of 4:20.59 and sophomore Maria Turcan was sixth at 4:22.10. In the 100 Butterfly, senior Megan Campbell placed fifth at 55.20 with sophomore Maria Kyle taking seventh at 55.49. Senior Julia Wawer was Emory's third All-American in the 200 Freestyle, touching seventh with a mark of 1:49.42.

The Eagles rounded out the night finishing as the national runner-up in the 400 Medley Relay as Cheng, Muir, Cambell and junior Hannah Lally registered a time of 3:40.32.

Freshman Rachel Song scored Honorable Mention acclaim in the 100 Fly, placing ninth with a time of 55.45 and in the 200 Freestyle, junior Meg Taylor won her consolation final to finish ninth overall at 1:49.89.

The 2018 NCAA DIII Championships continue on Friday with the 200 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke and the 800 Freestyle Relay. Prelims begin at 10:00 AM with the finals starting at 6:00 PM.
