Women's 800 Freestyle Relay Breaks NCAA DIII Record; Eagles On Cusp of Ninth-Straight Title

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving program earned its fourth national championship of 2018 and set its third NCAA Division III record as the Eagles collected seven more All-America performances Friday night in Indianapolis, Indiana.

With the strong evening, the Eagles find themselves in front by 117 points over second place Kenyon College (330) heading into the final day of competition. Emory, searching for its ninth-straight Division III team title and 11th overall, will try to close it out on the fourth and final day of action on Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 10:00 AM and finals starting at 6:00 PM EST. Events on the final day of competition include the 100 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke, 1,650 Freestyle and the 400 Freestyle Relay.

The 800 Freestyle Relay team of seniors Cindy Cheng, Julia Wawer and juniors Fiona Muir and Meg Taylor highlighted the Eagles on Friday as the group blazed to a new DIII record, winning the event in a time of 7:13.51.

Cheng added individual All-America honors in the 100 Backstroke, finishing as the national runner-up at 54.22. Sophomore Caroline Olson was third in the event at 54.33 while freshman Bethany Seagraves took eighth at 56.52.

In the 200 Butterfly, senior Rebecca Upton placed seventh in a time of 2:03.11 with classmate Megan Campbell earning Honorable Mention, finishing ninth at 2:03.40.

And in the 100 Breaststroke, junior Ashley Daniels turned in a sixth-place effort at 1:02.51 with fellow junior Hannah Lally touching eighth in a time of 1:03.56.
