Women's Swimming & Diving Wins 21st Consecutive & 27th Overall UAA Title

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving team extended its reign over the University Athletic Association Saturday night in Chicago, IL, capturing its 21st consecutive and 27th overall conference championship.

The Eagles won the team title with a total of 1,943 points, more than 450 points ahead of the rest of the field as host Chicago finished in second place with 1,484.5 points. Emory had a collective 15 event championships, 30 All-UAA finishes and saw two UAA records set.

Senior Fiona Muir was named the conference's Swimmer of the Year following a superb championship meet. Muir became the first woman in UAA history to win the 100 Freestyle four straight years, doing so on Saturday in a UAA record time of 50.12. She posted another UAA Record on Friday as she captured the 200 Freestyle with a winning time of 1:48.70 and was second in the 50 Freestyle on Thursday at 23.44. In addition to the individual finishes, Muir was a member of four relay titles: 400 Medley (3:44.97), 200 Freestyle (1:33.04), 800 Freestyle (7:27.54) and 400 Freestyle (3:23.27).

The Emory coaching staff of Head Coach Jon Howell and assistants Cindy Fontana, John Petroff and Bob Hackett were named the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year for the sixth consecutive year and 11th time overall.

To go along with the 400 Freestyle Relay win by Muir, senior Meg Taylor, junior Caroline Olson and sophomore Lucy Daro and Muir's win in the 100 Free, Emory took home victories in three other events on the final day of competition.

Senior Julia Durmer won her third straight 1,650 Freestyle crown with a time of 16:52.76 while freshman Gaige Elms won the 200 Backstroke, touching at 2:02.28 and senior Ashley Daniels completed the sweep of the Breaststroke events, winning the 200 with a time of 2:16.72.

In total, the Eagles saw nine All-UAA finishes on Saturday with other All-UAA honorees including Taylor in the 100 Free (2nd, 50.96), freshman Edie Bates (2nd, 2:18.95) and sophomore Lara Gemar (3rd, 2:19.79) in the 200 Breast and junior Maria Turcanu (2nd, 2:02.48) in the 200 Butterfly.
