For the second straight year, the University of Chicago plays host to the University Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships. The 33rd annual championships is scheduled to get underway Wednesday, February 12th and continue through Saturday, February 15th.
2020 Meet Outlook
Once again, the UAA is shaping up to be a highly competitive championship-style meet, featuring some of the best swimming & diving programs across the Division III landscape. Six of the eight Association schools are ranked inside both the men’s and women’s top-20 in the lastest CSCAA national rankings released earlier this month.
The men’s meet looks like it could be one of tightest races in a while with four programs situated inside the CSCAA top-nine. Carnegie Mellon leads the field in fifth (252 points), followed by Washington (6th, 239), Emory (7th, 224) and Chicago (9th, 200). NYU and Case Western Reserve round out the UAA schools ranked with the Violets checking in at 14th with 149 points and the Spartans seated 20th with 76.
For the women, the Eagles enter the meet ranked second nationally with 288 points, trailing top-ranked Denison by an eight-point margin. Joining Emory in the CSCAA top-10 is Chicago (7th, 220), WashU (9th, 202) and NYU (10th, 195). Carnegie Mellon is positioned 11th with 188 points while CWRU is ranked 20th with 79.
Continued Success
Head Coach Jon Howell and his Eagles will be in search of their 22nd consecutive conference titles when the meet gets underway Thursday with the swimming events. The men are unblemished at the UAA Championships during Howell’s run while a win this week will mark the 28th overall for the women and the 22nd under Howell.
2019 Championship Rewind
2019 marked a dominating performance for the Eagles in Chicago as Emory captured its 21st consecutive conference crown on both the men’s and women’s side.
For the men, the 393.5-point victory represented the largest UAA margin of victory since 2013. The Eagles, in total, collected 11 event titles, earned 20 All-UAA finishes and established one UAA record: Trey Kolleck in the prelims of the 100 Freestyle (44.30). In addition, Howell and his staff of Cindy Fontana, John Petroff and Bob Hackett were named the men’s Coaching Staff of the Year for third straight time and fifth overall.
On the women’s side, conference Swimmer of the Year recipient Fiona Muir led the Eagles to another stellar meet as the Eagles were 450 points better than second place WashU. During the meet, the Eagles were titles winners in 15 events, tallied 30 All-UAA performances and secured two UAA records: Muir in both 100 Freestyle (50.12) and 200 Freestyle (1:48.70).
Howell along with Fontana, Petroff and Hackett were named the women’s Coaching Staff of the Year for the sixth consecutive meet and 11th time overall.
