(Aug. 11) Mary Ellen Gordon will be honored in New York Aug. 22 for her selection to the Collegiate All-Star Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The day-long activities take place at the West Side Tennis Club, site of the U.S. Open until 1977. The event is presented by The Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. Bollettieri, a renowned tennis instructor, is scheduled to present awards to each player for their selection.
The ITA Collegiate All-Star Team includes the nation's top-ranked men's and women's tennis players at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and NJCAA levels, as well as champions from the 2002 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and 2003 NCAA Championships.
Gordon won the NCAA Division III singles and doubles championships and did the same for Division III at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
(July 17) Emory University has been cited as an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). In addition, seven Eagles have been honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Emory is one of 45 schools nationwide in NCAA Division III to receive the honor. To qualify, a team must have at least a 3.20 grade point average for the school year.
Only four Division III school had more ITA Scholar-Athletes than Emory. Eagles honored are Carina Alberelli, Petrel Chapman, Shannon Lovett, Margaret Moscato, Jolyn Taylor, Emily Warburg, and Alexis Weiss. To qualify, a player must be a varsity letterwinner and have at least a 3.50 grade point average for the school year.
This spring, Emory had a 3.60 team GPA and won the NCAA national team championship. The Eagles also claimed the NCAA national singles and doubles titles.
(June 24) Mary Ellen Gordon was selected as the tennis nominee for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year for NCAA Divison III. She was one of 12 nominees for the Honda-Broderick Cup that was presented to one winner each in NCAA Divisions I, II and III.
Gordon was selected in recognition of her NCAA triple crown last month in winning the national team, singles and doubles championships.
In honor of her nomination, the award's sponsor, American Honda Motor Company, will donate $1,000 to Emory's athletics department.
(June 10) Margaret Moscato has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America first team for women's at-large sports. Previously, she made the Academic All-District first team.
Moscato carried a 3.95 cumulative grade point average as a double major in biology and French studies. The junior was selected for the NCAA national championship in both singles and doubles. She had a 13-2 singles record against national top-20 Division III teams. Moscato teamed up with Emily Warburg to reach the national quarterfinals in doubles.
This is the ninth time an Emory women's tennis player has been named Academic All-American since 1988. Six of the nine honorees, including Moscato, were members of an NCAA national team championship. (Megan Bern, Jessica Levy and Adrian Poole, who account for the other five awards, played on Emory's 1996 national championship team.)

(May 19) For the first time in the history of NCAA Division III women's tennis, two teammates played for the national championship in singles. Junior Mary Ellen Gordon defeated freshman Jolyn Taylor 6-4, 6-1 in the finals of the NCAA Division III national singles tournament. The two then paired to win the national championship in doubles, defeating the tournament's fourth seeded pair from DePauw University (IN) 6-3, 6-2.
Gordon became the fifth person ever in Division III women's tennis to win the singles and the doubles titles in the same year and just the second person to win team, singles, and doubles championships in the same year. For Gordon, this is her third national championship in doubles. She is the third person in Division III women's tennis to accomplish that feat.
Gordon and Taylor both broke the Emory record for singles wins in a season, which was 29. Gordon finished the season undefeated against Division III competition with a record of 34-1 (.971 winning percentage). Taylor ended her freshman campaign with a record of 30-4 (.882 winning percentage). Gordon also broke the single season record for winning percentage, which was .905.
In only her junior year, Gordon now holds the all-time record at Emory for singles wins at 89. She also holds the school record for career winning percentage with a career record of 89-13 (.873 winning percentage). Gordon also holds the best career winning percentage for doubles with a career record of 76-19 (.800 winning percentage). She now ranks third all-time at Emory in career doubles wins with 76.
The team of Gordon and Taylor also broke the single season record for doubles wins, which was 26. The pair finished the season with a record of 30-5.
As a team, Emory earned six All-America certificates, which ties the school record set last season. In singles, Gordon and Taylor earned All-America recognition while Gordon, Taylor, Margaret Moscato, and Emily Warburg earned All-America recognition in doubles.
For Gordon, this is her sixth All-America honor, which is the most ever by an Emory women's tennis player. She has been named an All-American in both singles and doubles in each of her three seasons.
Taylor is now the second freshman in school history to be named All-America in both singles and doubles.
Moscato earned her third All-America citation, the second for doubles. For Warburg, she concludes her Emory career a four-time All-American, including three for doubles.
(May 18) Emory University set up an all-Emory final in the NCAA Division III national singles championship. Junior Mary Ellen Gordon and freshman Jolyn Taylor face each other tomorrow for the national singles title.
Both advanced with semifinal wins over different opponents from Washington & Lee University (Va.). In fact, both were rematches of the finals of the NCAA team championship in which Gordon and Taylor won in singles to help Emory beat W&L.
Gordon, the tournament's top seed, beat Erika Proko of W&L, ranked ninth in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 6-3, 6-3. Earlier, Gordon defeated No. 14 Stephanie Hall of Williams (Mass.), 6-4, 6-1.
This is the first time Gordon has reached the finals of the NCAA singles championship. She lost in the first round (round of 32) as a freshman and in the semifinals last year. Gordon won the ITA national singles title last fall.
Taylor, the tournament's No. 3 seed, won in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3, against Lindsey Hagerman, who is ranked sixth in the nation by the ITA. In the quarterfinals, Taylor was a 6-3, 6-0 winner against No. 16 Liz Bondi of DePauw (Ind.).
The doubles pairing of Gordon and Taylor, seeded No. 2, advanced to the semifinals by beating a duo from Trinity (Texas), ranked No. 7 in the nation, 6-3, 6-2. Emory's other doubles entrant, Margaret Moscato and Emily Warburg, ranked No. 16 in the nation, nearly upset the top-seeded duo from W&L before falling, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
(May 17) Emory University got off to a near-perfect start in the NCAA Division III national individual championships. One day after winning the national team title, Mary Ellen Gordon, Jolyn Taylor, Margaret Moscato and Emily Warburg returned to the courts for the singles and doubles tournaments.
Gordon and Taylor won their first two singles matches to advance to the national quarterfinals. Moscato was eliminated in the opening round (32 participants) of the singles tournament.
This is the second time in school history that two Eagles have reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles championship. Last year, Gordon made it to the national semifinals while Moscato was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Gordon, the No. 1 seed in the 32-player field, knocked off Julia Lebedeva of Beloit (Wisc.), ranked 26th in the nation in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round. Then Gordon beat the No. 8 ranked player in the nation, Stephanie Gong of Rhodes (Tenn.), 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Taylor, the tournament's No. 3 seed, beat Sara Hughes of Colby (Maine), 6-1, 6-1, before moving on to a 7-5, 6-0 win against unranked Julie Mallory of Williams (Mass.). Moscato, ranked 24th nationally by the ITA, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to the No. 17 ranked player, Rachel Holt of Amherst (Mass.).
In doubles, the No. 2 seed of Gordon and Taylor won their opening match (round of 16) against an unranked pairing from Williams (Mass.), 6-4, 6-3. Moscato and Warburg, ranked 16th nationally in doubles, beat the No. 10 ranked pairing in the nation from Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.
This is the first time in school history that two doubles pairings have reached the national quarterfinals. Gordon is the two-time defending national champion in doubles with Anusha Natarajan, who graduated last spring.
(May 16) Emory University claimed two major awards at the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association banquet. Jolyn Taylor was named national Rookie of the Year and Amy Smith the national Coach of the Year. Previously, both won their respective regional awards.
Taylor, a freshman, is ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles in the latest ITA national poll. She and partner Mary Ellen Gordon are No. 2 in the national doubles rankings. Taylor enters the NCAA individual championships with a 26-3 singles record and 26-5 doubles record.
Smith became the fifth person, first female, in history to win an NCAA team championship, in any division, as a player and coach. Emory was 24-1 in dual matches this season, losing only to a nationally ranked Division II school. In four seasons as Emory head coach, Smith's teams have compiled a 75-17 record (.815 winning percentage) with three trips to the national final four.
(May 16) Top-seeded Emory University won its second NCAA Division III national championship in school history with a 5-1 victory against Washington & Lee University (Va.). The Eagles also won the NCAA crown in 1996 against the same school by the same score.
The team's lone senior, Emily Warburg, clinched the championship point at No. 6 singles in a second-set tie-breaker, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Emory also won at No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 2 and 3 doubles.
Mary Ellen Gordon, ranked No. 1 in the nation, was a 6-4, 6-2 winner in singles against an opponent ranked ninth nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Jolyn Taylor, ranked No. 3 in the nation, was a 6-2, 6-0 winner against an opponent ranked No. 6 by the ITA.
Gordon and Taylor, the No. 2 nationally ranked doubles tandem, were 8-4 losers to the ITA's national No. 1 ranked doubles team. Emory's No. 2 doubles pair of Margaret Moscato and Warburg won 8-4, while its No. 3 doubles duo of Jamie Chan and Shannon Lovett won 8-6.
Emory finishes the season with a 24-1 dual-match record, losing only to a nationally ranked Division II school.
Emory was 19-0 against Division III teams. In those 19 dual matches, only twice did an opponent win more than one point.
Emory was 16-0 against nationally ranked Division III teams and 11-0 against national top-10 Division III.
Emory Coach Amy Smith becomes the fifth person ever to win an NCAA team championship, in any division, as a player and coach. She is the first female to achieve this feat and the second to do so at the same school. Smith played No. 1 singles for Emory when it captured the 1996 national crown.
(May 15) Emory University advanced to the finals of the NCAA Division III national championships with a 6-3 win against two-time defending national champion, Williams (Mass.).
This is the third time in school history that Emory has reached the national finals. The Eagles won the NCAA title in 1996 and lost to Williams last year.
This is the second time that the Eagles, ranked No.1 in the nation, have been No. 7 Williams this season. Emory was an 9-0 winner earlier this season on April 2.
Mary Ellen Gordon, ranked No. 1 nationally in singles, defeated Williams' top player, ranked 14th nationally, 6-1, 6-0. Gordon and doubles partner, Jolyn Taylor, who are ranked No. 2 nationally, were 8-2 winners against a Williams tandem ranked 22nd in the nation.
Emory improves its season record to 23-1 in dual matches. This is the third 20-win season in school history. The Eagles won 21 matches in 1997 and 20 in 1996.
(May 14) Emory University advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III national championships with a 9-0 win against Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.).
This is the second time that the Eagles, ranked No.1 in the nation, have been No. 14 Gustavus this season. Emory was an 8-1 winner earlier this season on April 1.
Mary Ellen Gordon, ranked No. 1 nationally in singles, defeated Gustavus' top player, ranked 23rd nationally, 6-1, 6-1. Gordon and doubles partner, Jolyn Taylor, who are ranked No. 2 nationally, were 8-2 winners against a Gustavus tandem ranked 10th in the nation.
(May 8) For the second time in school history, Emory University has been awarded all six singles and three doubles spots on the all-conference first team. The Eagles also received the same honor in 1996, the year it won the NCAA national championship.
Mary Ellen Gordon was named conference MVP for the third consecutive year. She is the first player in UAA history to receive the honor three times. (The only other two-time winner is Jessica Levy of Emory in 1994 and 1995.)
Jolyn Taylor was selected UAA Rookie of the Year. Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Coach Amy Smith and her assistants, Julie Mavity, Christie Schweer and Jayson Tobias.
On the all-UAA first team are Gordon (No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles), Taylor (No. 2 singles, No. 1 doubles), Jamie Chan (No. 3 singles, No. 2 doubles), Carina Alberelli (No. 4 singles, No. 3 doubles), Emily Warburg (No. 5 singles), Lindsay Tiemeyer (No. 6 singles), Shannon Lovett (No. 2 doubles), and Katherine Powell (No. 3 doubles). Margaret Moscato, normally at No. 3 singles, did not compete because she was taking the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) that weekend.
No other conference school has accomplished this sweep of first-team honors. The only UAA men's team ever to do so is Emory in 1995.
Emory won the conference team title for the 16th consecutive year. The Eagles have won every UAA championship since it first conducted tennis championships in 1988. That is the longest title streak in conference history in any sport.
(May 7) Four players from the top-ranked Emory women's tennis team have been selected to participate in the NCAA national championships for singles and/or doubles. Mary Ellen Gordon, Jolyn Taylor, and Margaret Moscato will compete in both the singles and doubles tournaments with senior Emily Warburg competing with Moscato in the doubles bracket. They are among 32 singles players and 16 doubles pairs selected from all NCAA Division III institutions to participate.
Gordon enters the national championships with a 26-1 singles record and ranked as the No. 1 singles player in Division III. She has participated in the NCAA singles tournament each of the last two seasons, advancing to the semifinals in 2002. A four-time All-American, Gordon won the ITA Division III singles title last fall.
Freshman Jolyn Taylor holds a 23-3 singles record this season entering her first appearance in the NCAA national championships. She is ranked third in Division III singles. Gordon and Taylor will team in the doubles bracket as well. The pair won the ITA Division III doubles title in the fall and enter the national championships ranked second nationally with a 24-4 record.
Margaret Moscato is making her second appearance in the NCAA singles national championship after advancing to the quarterfinals last season. A two-time All-American, she is currently ranked No. 24 nationally in singles. Moscato will team with Emily Warburg, an All-American in doubles last season, in the doubles draw. The pair enters the national championships ranked No. 16 nationally.
Freshman Jolyn Taylor was named regional Rookie of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Amy Smith was named regional Coach of the Year. Both are finalists for the national awards to be announced at the NCAA finals.
The NCAA Division III national individual championships will be held May 17-19 in Redlands, California.
(May 4) Emory University advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III national championship for the fourth consecutive year, all under Coach Amy Smith. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the nation, did so by winning the Atlantic South sub-regionals with a 9-0 win against No. 8 Rhodes College (Tenn.).
Mary Ellen Gordon, the nation's top-ranked singles player, was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against the No. 8 ranked singles player in the nation. Jolyn Taylor, ranked No. 3 nationally, was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles.
(April 28) Emory University has been selected for the NCAA national championships for the 19th consecutive year, the longest active streak in Division III. The Eagles are one of 26 teams nationwide selected for the tournament.
Emory is the top seed and the host for one of two NCAA Atlantic South regionals this weekend. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, get a first-round bye Saturday and play Sunday against the winner of Rhodes-U. of South match.
Earlier this season, Emory beat both teams 9-0. The Eagles are hoping to advance to the national finals where they finished second last season. This year's finals are in Redlands, Calif., May 14-19.
(April 27) Emory University won its 16th consecutive conference championship. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the nation, defeated No. 9 Washington (Mo.), 9-0, in the finals.
Emory, the tournament's top seed, beat Case Western Reserve (Ohio), 5-0, in the quarterfinals, and New York, 9-0, in the semifinals.
Emory has won the University Athletic Association championship every year since 1988 when the UAA first conducted tennis championships. That is the longest title streak in conference history in any sport.
The Emory men's team also won the UAA title, making it 14 consecutive years that both teams have swept the conference titles, an NCAA record in any sport or division.
The team played this weekend without its No. 3 singles player, Margaret Moscato, who was busy taking the Medical College Aptitude Test (MCAT).
(April 15) Emory University defeated Shorter College (Ga.), the top-ranked NAIA team in the nation. Mary Ellen Gordon, Jolyn Taylor, Carina Alberelli and Emily Warburg won singles matches, helping the Eagles to a 5-4 victory and increasing Emory's dual match record to 17-1. The match was Emory's last competition before the University Athletic Association championships in St. Louis. The Eagles hope to win their 16th consecutive conference title.
(April 10) Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University is one of 10 college tennis players nationwide selected for an All-Star team to represent the United States this summer in Japan June 12-16.
The team, selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is composed of men and women from all NCAA divisions (I, II and III) as well as NAIA, and junior/community colleges.
The ITA All-Star Team will help Waseda University celebrate its 100th anniversary of tennis by competing in two exhibition matches in Tokyo. Matches are scheduled to take place at Ariake Stadium, which holds a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
On June 14 the All-Stars will face Waseda University, which earned the No. 1 ranking in Japan last year, and on June 15 they will face a Japanese All-Star Team. Both matches will use a format similar to the one used by World Team Tennis, which features men and women competing together on the same team in men's and women's singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
The ITA All-Star Team will be coached by Bob Bayliss of Notre Dame and Ann Lebedeff of Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) Colleges. The ten players selected are: Gordon, Adam Davidson of Azusa Pacific (Calif.), Amer Delic of Illinois, Ryan Dunne of Florida Southern, John Paul Fruttero of California, Raquel Kops-Jones of California, Jewel Peterson of Southern California, Leslie Stewart of Tyler (Texas) Junior College, Sara Walker of UCLA and Todd Widom of Miami (Fla.).
(April 2) Emory University defeated Williams College (Mass.), ranked sixth nationally, by a score of 9-0 in their fourth and final match of the Fab 7 Tournament. Williams is the two-time defending national champions. This was the fourth win for the Eagles over a top-10 ranked opponent in six days and the eighth win this season over a top-10 opponent.
In singles action, Mary Ellen Gordon defeated an opponent ranked No. 33 nationally. Gordon is currently the top-ranked singles player and undefeated against NCAA Division III competition in the spring season. Jolyn Taylor, Margaret Moscato, Jamie Chan, Carina Alberelli, and Emily Warburg also won singles matches for the Eagles.
Emory improves to 14-1 in the spring season and remains undefeated against NCAA Division III competition. The 14 victories includes a win against a Division I opponent, Wofford College (SC), without losing a single match.
The Eagles are currently ranked No. 1 in Division III and feature the top-ranked singles player (Gordon) and the top-ranked doubles team in Gordon and Jolyn Taylor. Three other singles players are ranked in the top-35 nationally, including two in the top-20, and one other doubles team is ranked in the top-15.
(April 1) Emory University defeated Gustavus Adolphus College (MN), ranked fifth nationally, by a score of 8-1 in their third match of the Fab 7 Tournament.
In singles action, every Emory player defeated their opponent in straight sets. Further, no Eagle lost more than a total of four games in winning two sets. Mary Ellen Gordon, Jolyn Taylor, Margaret Moscato, Jamie Chan, Carina Alberelli, and Emily Warburg all won singles matches for the Eagles.
Emory improves to 13-1 on the season.
(March 30) Emory University defeated Washington & Lee University (VA), ranked second nationally, by a score of 8-1 in their second match of the Fab 7 Tournament.
In singles action, all but one Emory player defeated their opponent in straight sets with two players winning against nationally ranked opponents. Mary Ellen Gordon defeated the No. 13 ranked player in Division III. Jolyn Taylor defeated an opponent ranked No. 26 nationally. Margaret Moscato, Jamie Chan, Carina Alberelli, and Emily Warburg all won singles matches for the Eagles.
Emory (12-1) has not lost to a Division III opponent.
(March 28) Emory University defeated Trinity University (TX), ranked fourth nationally, by a score of 9-0 in their opening match of the Fab 7 Tournament.
In singles action, each Emory player defeated their opponent in straight sets with three players winning against nationally ranked opponents. Mary Ellen Gordon defeated the sixth ranked player in Division III. Jolyn Taylor defeated an opponent ranked No. 16 nationally. Margaret Moscato defeated a player ranked No. 36 nationally.
In doubles action, Gordon and Taylor defeated the second ranked team in Division III. The team of Moscato and Emily Warburg defeated the No.15 ranked doubles pair.
This was the first of four matches against top-10 ranked opponents for the Eagles in the next six days of the Fab 7 Tournament.
(March 22) Emory University remained undefeated against NCAA Division III competition by winning two matches, both victories came over top-20 ranked teams. In the first match of the day, Emory defeated the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, ranked No. 18 nationally, by a score of 7-2. In the second match of the day, Emory defeated DePauw University (IN), ranked No. 10 nationally, by a score of 8-1.
Against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Mary Ellen Gordon defeated yet another top-50 ranked opponent in straight sets. Jolyn Taylor, Carina Alberelli, Shannon Lovett, and Lindsay Tiemeyer all won singles matches for the Eagles.
Against DePauw, Gordon defeated the third-ranked singles player in Division III in straight sets. Freshman Jolyn Taylor also won in straight sets against a player ranked No. 12 in the nation. Alberelli, Lovett, and Tiemeyer each won their second singles matches of the day.
The Eagles improve to 10-1 on the season heading into the Fab 7 Tournament this weekend that will feature seven of the top-10 ranked teams in Division III, including four of the top five.
(March 16) Emory University defeated Amherst College (MA), ranked third in NCAA Division III, by a score of 9-0. This is the second consecutive win for the Eagles without losing a single match against top-10 ranked competition.
Mary Ellen Gordon defeated an opponent ranked 11th nationally at No. 1 singles. Every Eagle won their singles match without losing a set. This is also the second consecutive win for the Eagles against a top-10 opponent without dropping a single set in singles action.
Emory is now 8-1 on the season, with the lone loss coming to a top-10 ranked NCAA Division II opponent. The Eagles feature four players ranked in the top-35 nationally in Mary Ellen Gordon (No. 1), Jolyn Taylor (No. 8), Jamie Chan (No. 19), and Margaret Moscato (No. 35). Emory also has two of the top-20 ranked doubles pairs in Mary Ellen Gordon/Jolyn Taylor (No.1) and Margaret Moscato/Emily Warburg (No. 19).
(March 15) The Eagles match against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (CA) has been rained out. Emory has played three matches in the last four days in California. The Eagles won two of those three matches, including wins over a top-15 Division II opponent and a top-10 ranked Division III opponent.
(March 14) Emory University returned to action against a NCAA Division III opponent by defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College, ranked tenth nationally, without losing a match. The final score was 9-0.
In singles play, Mary Ellen Gordon only dropped one game en route to defeating an opponent ranked eighth in Division III in straight sets. Freshman Jolyn Taylor also only dropped one game in a straight sets win against a top-25 singles opponent. No Emory player lost a set as each Eagle won their singles match.
(March 12) Emory University defeated the University of California-San Diego by a final score of 5-4. UC-San Diego is ranked 14th in NCAA Division II and offers athletic scholarships.
In singles play, Mary Ellen Gordon won her No. 1 singles match against an opponent who had defeated a Division I player at No. 1 singles a week before. Freshman Jolyn Taylor won at No. 2 singles by defeating a top-50 ranked Division II player. Jamie Chan and Katherine Powell also won their singles matches.
In doubles action, Gordon and Taylor teamed to win their No. 1 doubles match.
(March 11) Emory University dropped its first of five matches in California with a 6-3 loss to California Polytechnic University-Pomona. Cal Poly Pomona is ranked 10th in NCAA Division II and offers athletic scholarships.
In singles play, sophomore Carina Alberelli and freshman Katherine Powell won matches for the Eagles.
In doubles action, Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor teamed to defeat an opponent ranked 13th amongst Division II pairs by a score of 8-2.
(March 8) Emory University remained unbeaten with a 8-1 win against Methodist College (NC). Emory is now 5-0 on the season.
(March 2) Emory University remained unbeaten with a 7-2 win against Auburn University-Montgomery, the NAIA national runner-up last season. Auburn is ranked third nationally in NAIA this season.
(Feb. 22) Emory University, ranked No. 1 in the nation, completed a weekend sweep with a 9-0 shutout of Rhodes College (Tenn.), ranked ninth nationally in NCAA Division III.
At No. 1 doubles, Emory's Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor, ranked first in the nation, beat a Rhodes pairing that was ranked 19th nationally.
Taylor then filled in for Gordon at No. 1 singles. Taylor, ranked eighth nationally in singles, was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against a Rhodes player ranked 34th nationally.
Emory improves to 3-0 overall, 2-0 against Division III opponents. Last season Emory was 19-4 overall, 17-2 in Division III.
(Feb. 21) Top-ranked Emory University was a 9-0 winner at the University of the South (Tenn.). The home team was ranked 26th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Emory's No. 1 doubles team of Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor beat a Sewanee doubles pairing that was ranked 11th in the South region.
(Feb. 16) Emory University shut out NCAA Division I Wofford College (S.C.) to open its spring season. The match was played using Division I scoring rules (seven points as opposed to nine) resulting in a final score of 7-0. Emory is ranked No. 1 in the nation for Division III.
(Nov. 27, 2002) Emory University is No. 1 in the national end-of-fall rankings for NCAA Division III compiled by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In addition, Emory's Mary Ellen Gordon is No. 1 in the national singles rankings and No. 1 in the doubles rankings along with partner Jolyn Taylor.
Gordon is one of four Emory players ranked among the top 20 singles players in the nation, a feat unmatched by any other school. Taylor is No. 8 in the singles rankings followed by Julia Jacobs at No. 18 and Jamie Chan at No. 19. Margaret Moscato is listed at No. 35 giving Emory five players in the top 35.
Joining Gordon and Taylor in the national doubles rankings are teammates Moscato and Emily Warburg at No. 12. Emory is one of two schools with two doubles pairings ranked in the top 12 nationally.
Gordon won the ITA national singles title for Division III earlier this fall. She and Taylor teamed up to win the ITA national doubles title.
Last spring, Emory finished second at the NCAA national team championships. The Eagles were ranked No. 1 nationally by the ITA in the 1996 end-of-season rankings after winning the NCAA national title and in the 1997 pre-season rankings.

(Oct. 21, 2002) Mary Ellen Gordon is only the second player ever to win two Division III national singles titles at the ITA national championship. She did so this year and in 2000 when she became the first Division III player to reach the singles finals of the ITA "Super Bowl."
Gordon is the fourth player to sweep the Division III singles and doubles titles at the ITA nationals.
Gordon and teammate Jolyn Taylor won the Division III doubles title. They qualified for the ITA "Super Bowl" where they became the second Division III duo, first since 1995, to reach the "Super Bowl" doubles finals.

(Oct. 20, 2002) The doubles pairing of Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor lost in the ITA "Super Bowl" finals, 8-2, to a pairing from Ouachita Baptist (Ark.), the NCAA Division II national champion.
Gordon and Taylor previously earned doubles All-America honors by winning the ITA regional championship. They followed up by winning the ITA national title for Division III, which put them into the "Super Bowl" draw where they defeated the NAIA national champion.

The duo defeated the NAIA national champion, a pairing from Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), 9-7. They play Sunday in the finals against a team from Ouachita Baptist (Ark.), the NCAA Division II national champion.
In the "Super Bowl" singles, Gordon lost in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3, to Antonina Grib of Brenau (Ga.), winner of the NAIA draw at the ITA nationals. Two years ago, Grib beat Gordon in the "Super Bowl" finals, preventing Gordon from becoming the first Division III player to win the "Super Bowl."
(Oct. 19, 2002) Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University was selected as the female winner of a sportsmanship award at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national championships in Dallas.
The James O'Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award goes to a men's and women's player who "displays outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifies the spirit of college tennis" during the ITA nationals.
Gordon was selected from among all female participants in the singles and doubles draws for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, and JUCO.
(Oct. 19, 2002) Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University won the singles title at the ITA national championships in Dallas.
Gordon, the No. 2 seed, was a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (2) winner against top-seeded Elena Blanina of Methodist (N.C.).
This is Gordon's second national ITA singles title. She won the tournament as a freshman in 2000. At last year's ITA nationals, Gordon lost in the finals to Blanina.
With the win, Gordon advances to the ITA singles "Super Bowl" where she joins the national winner for NCAA Divisions I and II and NAIA. Gordon also is competing in the doubles "Super Bowl" along with teammate Jolyn Taylor.
(Oct. 18, 2002) Emory University's Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor won the doubles championship at the ITA national championship in Dallas, Texas. The duo triumphed 8-4 against a pairing from Trinity (Texas). They are the first Emory doubles pairing ever to win the ITA national title.
The two advance to the ITA "Super Bowl" this weekend, featuring champions from brackets for NCAA Division I, II and III, and NAIA.
Gordon and Taylor, the tournament's top seed, advanced to the finals after defeating doubles pairs from College of New Jersey, 8-0, and Methodist (N.C.), 8-5.
For the third consecutive year, junior Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University advanced to the singles finals of the ITA National Championships. Gordon, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, faces top-seeded Elena Blanina from Methodist College (N.C.), Saturday at 10 am.
Gordon won her quarterfinal singles match against Haley Heathman of DePauw (Ind.), 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The win avenged Gordon's last encounter with Heathman at the 2001 NCAA Division III National Singles Championships. Gordon, then the number one seeded player, lost to Heathman in the first round.
In the ITA semifinals match, Gordon defeated Lindsay Smith of Trinity University (Texas), 6-3, 6-1.
The singles championship is a rematch of last year's finals match. At last year's tournament Blanina defeated Gordon for the title. The match is Gordon's third appearance in the national finals. Two years ago she won the national tournament and advanced to the finals of the ITA "Super Bowl" singles tournament.
(Oct. 6, 2002) Emory University captured both the singles and doubles championships at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional championships Oct. 5-7 at Sewanee, Tenn.
Emory's Mary Ellen Gordon won the singles championship and then teamed up with Jolyn Taylor to capture the doubles championship. Both advance to the ITA national championships in Dallas Oct. 17-20 where they face other regional winners.
By winning the regional, Gordon becomes a singles All-American for the third consecutive year, the first Emory player ever to do so. Gordon and Taylor receive doubles All-America honors by virtue of their doubles championship.
Emory players accounted for both spots in the singles finals, all four spots in the semifinals, seven of the eight quarterfinalists, and 11 berths in the round of 16. The doubles championship also was an all-Emory affair.
In the singles finals, Gordon, the top seed, defeated Taylor, the sixth seed, by a score of 7-5, 6-4. Gordon, a junior, advanced to the finals by defeating teammate Julia Jacobs, the No. 4 seed, in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-4. Taylor, a freshman, defeated unseeded freshman teammate Jamie Chan to advance to the final match, 6-2, 6-3.
Gordon and Taylor, seeded No. 1, won the doubles tournament by defeating the No. 3 seed, teammates Emily Warburg and Margaret Moscato, in the final match, 8-4. Gordon and Taylor advanced to the finals by defeating the Emory team of Jamie Chan and Carina Alberelli, 8-4.
Two years ago, Gordon won the ITA national and regional singles championships. She also advanced to the finals of the ITA "Super Bowl" in singles that same year. Gordon is a two-time NCAA national doubles champion with a partner since graduated.
(Oct. 5, 2002) The singles bracket of ITA Regional Championships features an all Emory semifinal. Top-seeded Mary Ellen Gordon defeated teammate Lindsay Tiemeyer, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, to advance and will play teammate Julia Jacobs in the semifinals. Jacobs defeated teammate Shannon Lovett in her quarterfinal match, 6-4, 6-2.
In the other semifinal match, two Eagle freshman, Jamie Chan and Jolyn Taylor will play for the remaining spot in the singles final. Chan defeated teammate Margaret Moscato, the second seeded player in the tournament, in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Taylor, the sixth seeded player, defeated Stephanie Gong of Rhodes College, the third seeded player in the tournament, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, Emory placed three teams in the semifinals. The pair of Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor, the top-seeded team, will play the Emory team of Jamie Chan and Carina Alberelli. Margaret Moscato and Emily Warburg, the third-seeded team, will play the second-seeded team from Rhodes College.
(Oct. 4, 2002) In singles action, 11 of 12 Emory players advanced to the round of 16 in the ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Every Eagle doubles team advanced to the second round of the tournament.
(October 3, 2002) Emory University is well represented in the seedings for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional championships this weekend at Sewanee, Tenn.
Four of the eight seeds in singles are from Emory, including top-seed Mary Ellen Gordon. Margaret Moscato is seeded second, Julia Jacobs fourth and newcomer Jolyn Taylor sixth.
Last season, Gordon advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA national singles tournament to earn singles All-America honors for the second time. Moscato also became a singles All-American by reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Jacobs ended last season ranked 11th in the region among singles players.
Gordon won the ITA national and regional singles championship two years ago. She also advanced to the finals of the ITA "Super Bowl" in singles that same year.
