Athletes of the Week

(May 22) Sophomore Cristina Arellano went 2-0 this past week during the NCAA Championships in Santa Cruz, Calif. In a 5-1 victory over Trinity University (Texas) in the national semifinals, Arellano was the deciding match as she defeated Leigh Pankonien 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. In the championship match against Washington & Lee University (Va.) she defeated Kelly Will at No. 6 6-1, 6-2. In doubles play she teamed with Samantha Shapiro to go 3-0 during the tournament at No. 3 doubles. For the season Arellano finished with a singles record of 14-5 and a doubles record of 17-3.


(April 17) Sophomore Linda Tien went 3-1 this past week for the top-ranked Emory women's tennis team.  After dropping a match on Tuesday at Sewanee, Tien came back to win three straight matches in contests versus Rhodes College, Mary Washington and second-ranked Washington & Lee.  For the season she stands 10-8, going 5-5 at the No. 1 position, 4-3 at No. 2 and 1-0 at No. 3.


(April 10) Sophomore Samantha Shapiro turned in a dominating performance this past weekend, claiming a 6-0, 6-0 victory over DeAngiae Johnson of Spelman College.  Shapiro, who competes in the No. 4 singles position, raises her record to 7-5 on the season.  In doubles action, Shapiro and her doubles partner are 8-5 on the season.           


(April 3) Sophomore Indu Anand improved her No. 4 singles record to 9-2 on the season, with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Depauw University's Alex Nelson.  Anand's nine victories, leads the team.  She also stands 7-4 on the season in doubles play, primarily playing at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.  She is 4-4 at No. 2, while 3-0 at No. 3.  Her and doubles partner Cristina Arellano earned their second victory of the season with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.         


(March 27) Junior Richelle Marasigan went undefeated in singles competition this past week at the "Fab Five" tournament in Lexington, Va.  Marasigan competed in No. 2 and 3 singles during the tournament.  During the event she did not drop a set.  Her record now stands at 4-5 on the season.  For the season she has competed at one, two and three singles.         


(March 20) Sophomore Linda Tien improved her singles record to 6-2 after going 2-0 this past week on road trip through California.  Tien competed at No. 1 singles, raising her record to 3-0 in that position.  She stands 3-2 at No. 2 singles.  In doubles she stands 7-1 on the season.  She is 1-0 at No. 2 singles and 6-1 at No. 3.


(March 13) Sophomore Indu Anand won her third match of the season this past Wednesday against Swarthmore College (Pa.), while competing at No. 4 singles.  She swept through her match, winning 6-0, 6-0.  For the season she stands 3-2.  Anand also won her doubles match with Samantha Shapiro by a score of 8-6.


(March 6) Senior captain Jamie Chan went 2-1 in singles this past week for the top-ranked Emory women's tennis team.  Against Clayton State, she won 6-1, 6-0 over D. Petkova.  After falling to Nadia Lysak of Auburn-Montgomery, she bounced back to defeat Lauren Isenhour of NCAA Division I member UNC-Wilmington by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (6), 10-5. 


(Sept. 26) Burkard claimed the ITA South Region singles title this past weekend at Emory. Burkard, a sophomore, was seeded third for the event and defeated top seed Gab Carvalho of Sewanee in the semifinals before defeating fellow teammate Richelle Marasigan in the finals. She now moves on to the ITA Championships. With the region victory she now earns All-America honors.
