Athletes of the Week

(May 7) Emory University's Kirsten Hillock won each of her three matches while competing in the NCAA National Tournament for the seventh-ranked Eagles.  Facing Huntingdon College (Ala.) in the second round of the tournament, the freshman teamed with Jenny Moscato to pick up an 8-1 win in the third-doubles spot, helping Emory advance with a 5-0 victory.  Against the fourth-ranked University of the South (Tenn.), Hillock teamed with Moscato again for a third-doubles victory, and won her match in the fourth-singles spot, 6-3, 6-2.  She finishes her inaugural season as an Eagle with a 13-8 record overall in singles play, and a 15-7 record in doubles action. 


(Apr. 23) Emory's Tshema Nash recorded a perfect week in singles play, including a 3-0 mark at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, helping the Eagles to their 20th-consecutive conference title.  Nash opened up her week against Washington & Lee University (Va.), picking up a win over the sixth-ranked player in the region.  The freshman continued her week with three matches at the UAA Championship, claiming victory in all of her singles matches and two of her three doubles matches.  Nash now sits at 13-6 in singles play this season, as the Eagles improved to 13-8 after three wins during the week.


(Apr. 16) Emory University's Sabra Rogers recorded a combined record of 4-0 in her doubles and singles matches for the Eagles last week.  Playing out of the no. 3 singles spot against the sixth-ranked University of the South (Tenn.), Rogers picked up a 6-0, 7-5 victory.  She also combined with Richelle Marasigan to shut out her counterparts in the top doubles spot, winning 8-0.  Against Berry College (Ga.), the freshman picked up a three-set win in the no. 3 singles spot, and a 9-8 win with Marasigan in the no. 1 doubles role.  The victories raise Rogers' record to 13-3 overall in singles play, and 4-0 in the third singles spot this season, while she improved to 10-7 in doubles play during the campaign.  Rogers' play helped bring the second-ranked Eagles' record to 10-7 in 2007.


(Apr. 2) Emory University's Sabra Rogers finished the week with a 2-0 record in singles play, while competing against two ranked teams.  Playing out of the third singles role, Rogers picked up a straight-set win (6-1, 6-1) against her counterpart from the 12th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).  Against the 19th-ranked Trinity University (Tex.), the freshman picked up a second win in the third singles role, defeating her opponent 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.  She added an 8-5 win while playing in the first-doubles match against Trinity.  Rogers improved her singles record to 11-3 this season, and her doubles record to 9-8, while helping Emory University, ranked second in the nation, to a 9-6 record in 2007.


(Mar. 26) Kirsten Hillock won both her singles and doubles matches to lead Emory University, the top-ranked women's tennis team in the nation, over the second-ranked DePauw University (Ind.).  Playing out of the fourth-singles spot, Hillock defeated her DePauw counterpart in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.  Hillock raised her season record to a perfect 5-0 in the fourth-singles role, and 7-5 overal this year.  In doubles play, the freshman teamed with Jenny Moscato to pick up a 8-5 victory in the third-doubles match, increasing the pair's record to 6-1 in 2007.  Both of Hillock's wins were key victories for the Eagles, who edged DePauw by a score of 5-4.  The win raises Emory's season record to 8-4 this season, and 8-1 against Division I opponents. 


(Mar. 21) Emory University's Tshema Nash completed a 4-0 week in singles matches out of the number two singles position during the Eagles' recent Spring trip.  All of Nash's victories came in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her counterpart from Claremont Mudd-Scripps College (Calif.), the fourth-ranked team in the nation.  In doubles play, the freshman teamed with Allison Fick to record a 3-1 record during the week.  For the season, Nash has a 6-3 record in singles matches, and a 7-2 record in doubles.  Emory, the top-ranked team in the nation, defeated three ranked teams during the week to raise its record to 7-4 during the 2007 campaign.


(Mar. 5) Jenny Moscato turned in a 3-1 in Emory University sixth singles spot, and a 4-0 week in the third doubles role, helping the top-ranked Eagles to a 2-2 record over four matches during the week.  Against the two-time defending NAIA Champion Auburn University Montgomery, Moscato won both her singles and doubles matches, accounting for two of Emory's three victories in a 6-3 loss.  The sophomore went on to win both her singles and doubles matches against Huntingdon College (Ala.) and Methodist University (NC) as well.  With the victories, Moscato improved to 4-2 in singles matches and 5-1 in doubles matches during her 2007 campaign.


(Feb. 26) Sabra Rogers, member of the top-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis Team, won three of the four matches she played in last week.  Competing against Shorter College (Ga.), Rogers did not lose a game in the #4 singles position, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-0.  Rogers also picked up a win by teaming with Richelle Marasigan in the #1 doubles position, leading Emory to a 6-3 win over Shorter.  Rogers and Marasigan teamed up again in the #1 doubles position against Division I opponent Georgia State University, picking up Emory's only win during the match.  Rogers helped the Eagles to a 1-1 start to their 2007 campaign.


(Oct. 1) Emory senior Richelle Marasigan turned in an outstanding performance at the ITA Region Championships this past weekend, capturing the singles title while advancing to the doubles championship.  Marasigan, who entered the weekend as the No. 2 seed, won four matches en route to the singles crown, defeating Laura Fanjoy of Sewanee in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2, before rallying against teammate Linda Tien in the championship match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.  In doubles action, Marasigan joined forces with Tien to advance to the championship match where they fell short against Sewanee's team of Fanjoy and Gabriela Carvalho.
