Athletes of the Week

(May 19) Emory University's top-pairing of Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers completed a 3-1 week in doubles play at the NCAA Division III Championships.  In the quarterfinals round of the team championships, Nash and Rogers shut out the eventual National runner-up doubles team of Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane from Denison University (Ohio), winning 8-0.  In the National Doubles Competition, Emory's sophomore pairing opened the tournament by defeating the top-seeded pair of Siobhan Finicane and Olivia Muesse from Pimona-Pitzer Colleges in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.  The Eagles would also pick up a 6-0, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals round over Erin Andrade and Kayla Smith from DePauw University (Ind.), before dropping a semifinal match to the eventual two-time National Champions, Brittany Berckes and Alicia Menezes from Amherst College (Mass.) in three sets.  Nash and Rogers finished their 2007-08 season with an overall record of 16-6 in doubles play.


(May 5) Emory University's Kirsten Hillock was perfect in both singles and doubles play, helping the Eagles advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament.  During a 5-0 win over UAA-rival Washington University (Mo.) in the second round of the tournament, Hillock picked up an 8-3 win in second-doubles play, and led 6-3 over the 21st-ranked player in the Central Region, before the third-singles match was left unfinished.  In the third round, the sophomore helped Emory to a 5-0 victory over Trinity University (Texas), winning the third-singles match, 6-1, 6-0, and the second-doubles match, 8-4.  Hillock holds a team-best 18-7 record in singles play this season, and a 14-9 record in doubles play.  Emory, ranked fourth in the nation with a 16-9 record, advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals with the pair of victories.


(Apr. 21) Emory University's Tshema Nash recorded a perfect record in both singles and doubles play at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships last weekend.  Nash won all three of her matches in the first-singles role, including a 6-4, 7-5 win over the 30th-ranked University of Chicago's Marissa Lin (ranked third in singles play in the Central Region), and a 6-3, 6-1 victory over ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University's Amy Staloch (ranked ninth in singles in the Atlantic South Region).  In first-doubles play, the sophomore teamed with Sabra Rogers to defeat the Central Region's fourth-ranked doubles team of Chicago's Lin and Vindya Dayananda and the Atlantic South's second-ranked pairing of Staloch and Jennifer Chui, both by 8-3 scores.  Nash, who is the sixth-ranked singles player and part of the fourth-ranked doubles team in the Atlantic South Region, improved her record to 16-9 in singles play and 16-10 in doubles play.  She led the fourth-ranked Eagles to their 21st-consecutive UAA Championship, and a 14-9 overall record this season.


(Apr. 7) Emory University's Kirsten Hillock completed a perfect week for the Eagles, going 2-0 in singles play and 4-0 in doubles matches.  Against the 17th-ranked University of the South (Tenn.), Hillock picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory over her fourth-singles counterpart, and an 8-1 victory with Jenny Moscato as the third-doubles pairing, helping the Eagles to a 5-4 victory over Sewanee.  While competing against Oglethorpe University (Ga.), the sophomore won 6-0, 1-0 (ret.) in the second-singles spot, and 8-1 with Moscato in the second-doubles role.  Hillock also picked up doubles victories with Moscato against Agnes Scott College (Ga.) and Wesleyan College (Ga.).  Hillock, ranked third in the region in singles play, improved her singles record to a team-best 14-6 mark, and is 10-7 in doubles matches this year.  Her contributions have helped the Eagles to five-straight wins, and an 11-8 overall record this season.


(Mar. 31) While competing against some of the top-Division III Women's Tennis teams at the Fab Five Tournament, Emory University's Kirsten Hillock recorded a perfect 3-0 record out of the fourth-singles spot, and did not lose a set in her three matches for the Eagles.  In a 7-2 Emory victory over the sixth-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.), Hillock picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over her singles counterpart, and teamed with Leah Seyburn for a 9-8 (7-3) victory as the Eagles' second-doubles team.   In a 5-4 loss to third-ranked Williams College (Mass.), the sophomore earned a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory in singles play.  She rounded out her weekend with an 8-0 pro-set victory in singles play over her counterpart from 11th-ranked Trinity University (Texas), helping Emory to a 5-1 win.  Hillock has a team-best 11-7 record in singles play this season, leading the Eagles to a 7-8 record this year, including a 4-1 mark against Division III teams.


(Mar. 24) Sophomore Sara Vrabec, of the fourth-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team, picked up a key singles victory during the Eagles' 5-4 win over fifth-ranked DePauw University (Ind.).  With the contest tied 4-4 heading into her match, Vrabec was able to pick up a straight-set victory out of the sixth-singles position (6-1, 6-4), to clinch the win for Emory.  The win brings Vrabec's record to 5-4 in singles play this season.  Her play helped the Eagles improve to 5-7 this year, including a 2-0 mark against Division III opponents.


(Mar. 17) Emory University's Tshema Nash went 3-1 in the first-doubles role and 2-2 as the Eagles' second-singles player, during four Emory matches against Division II teams last week.  In a 5-4 Emory victory against the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the 39th-ranked team in Division II, Nash recorded a match-clinching 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory, following her 8-6 victory with Sabra Rogers in doubles play.  During an 8-1 victory over Chaminade University (Hi.), Nash picked up a 6-3, 6-1 singles victory, and an 8-5 victory with Rogers in doubles play.  The sophomore improved to 8-6 this season in both singles and doubles play, and has won four of her last six singles matches.  Emory went 2-2 during the four matches last week, as the fourth-ranked team in Division III improved to 4-6 on the season.


(Mar. 10) Emory University freshman Lorne McManigle picked up a victory in singles play during the Eagles' 6-3 loss to Hawaii Pacific University, the 14th-ranked team in Division II.  McManigle, a freshman playing in the third-singles position, defeated her counterpart 6-1, 6-3.  Her victory was one of two Emory singles victories during the day, and improved her record to 5-6 in singles play this season. 


(Mar. 3) Emory University's Sabra Rogers led the fourth-ranked Eagles to a 9-0 win over Huntingdon College (Ala.).  Playing out of the first singles position, the sophomore topped her opponent 6-1, 6-0.  In doubles play, she teamed with Tshema Nash in the first position, as the pair shutout their counterparts 8-0.  Rogers improved to 7-5 in singles play and 6-5 in doubles play this season, as the Eagles' record improved to 2-4 with the win.


(Feb. 11) Emory University's Jenny Moscato won both her singles matches in the sixth position during the Eagles' opening week.  During a 6-3 Emory win over Shorter College (Ga.), Moscato shut out her counterpart, winning both sets of her match 6-0, 6-0.  The junior then provided the Eagles with their only win against the ninth-ranked team in Division II, Clayton State University (Ga.), defeating her opponent 4-6, 6-3, 10-2.  Moscato improved her record this year to 5-1, including 2-0 in dual matches, as the fourth-ranked Eagles moved to 1-1 in 2008.


(Sept. 24) Emory University's Sabra Rogers won the singles and doubles titles at the 2007 Fall Wilson/ ITA Southern Regional Championships.  The sophomore, seeded third in the singles draw, did not lose a set during her six-match championship run.  Rogers defeated teammate Kirsten Hillock 6-2, 6-2 becoming the sixth-consecutive Eagle to claim the singles title.  In doubles play, Rogers teamed with Sara Vrabec to win all five doubles matches, including a third-round victory over the top seeded pairing in the tournament.  The duo defeated teammates Bavana Ketha and Jenny Moscato in the doubles draw final.  By winning the regional singles and doubles tournament, Rogers will advance to the ITA National Tournament in Fort Meyers, Fla. On October 12th-15th.
