(May 26) Emory University's Lorne McManigle won the singles title at the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. McManigle, the fifth seed in the tournament, defeated Ploy Suthijindawong of the College of St. Scholastica 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match to become the second individual champion in the program's history. The sophomore went 5-0 during the tournament, including a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3) upset win over the bracket's fourth-seeded player in the quarterfinals. McManigle finished her season with a 25-10 record in singles play, the ninth-best win total in the program's history. In addition, with Emory men's tennis player Michael Goodwin's win in the men's singles tournament, it marks the third time in NCAA Division III history that the men's and women's individual champion has come from the same school. Earlier in the week, McManigle helped the Eagles claim third place at the NCAA Team Championships, the ninth top-three finish in the program's history.
(May 11) Emory University's Tshema Nash went
2-0 in singles matches during the second and third rounds of the
NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament. Playing in the
third singles and first doubles matches, Nash helped the Eagles to
a 5-2 win over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University with a
6-2, 6-2 win over her counterpart. The junior
all-American scored two points for the third-seeded Eagles during a
5-0 win over Agnes Scott College, winning her doubles match 8-3 and
her singles contest 6-0, 6-1. Nash is 13-8 in singles play
and 12-11 in doubles contests this season, helping Emory to its
ninth NCAA quarterfinals appearance in the last 10 years.
(May 11) Emory University's Zahra Dawson helped
the third-seeded Eagles advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA
Division III Women's Tennis Tournament with a perfect weekend as
the team's second singles and doubles player. During Emory's
5-2 win over fifth-seeded Washington and Lee University, Dawson,
ranked sixth in the region in singles play, upset her fifth-ranked
counterpart Ellen Yeatman 7-5, 0-6, 6-1, to clinch the match for
Emory. Earlier in the contest, she teamed with Lorne
McManigle to earn an 8-3 win over their regionally eighth-ranked
doubles counterparts. Dawson also earned an 8-1 doubles win during
the Eagles' 5-0 victory over Agnes Scott College in the second
round of the tournament. The freshman is 21-7 in singles play
this season, including wins in 12 of her last 13 matches, and is
14-2 and ranked fifth in the region with McManigle in doubles
play. Dawson's play helped the Eagles advance to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships for the 20th time overall,
and the ninth time in the last 10 years.
(Apr. 27) Fourth-ranked Emory University's Zahra Dawson was perfect in all three of her second singles and doubles matches at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Tennis Tournament last weekend. Dawson clinched the UAA Title for Emory with her 6-4, 6-1 win against her counterpart from third-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, following her 8-0 win in doubles play with teammate Lorne McManigle. In the semifinal match against fifth-ranked University of Chicago, the freshman earned a 6-2, 6-3 win in singles play, and a key 9-8 (10-8) win in her doubles match. Dawson, the sixth-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South Region, has a record of 20-7 in singles play, including 11 wins in her last 12 matches, and a 12-2 record with McManigle in doubles matches. She has helped the Eagles to an 18-4 record on the campaign, and their 22nd-consecutive UAA Championship.
(Apr. 20) Emory University's Tshema Nash recorded a perfect week as the third-singles and first-doubles player during three matches for the fourth-ranked Eagles last week. Nash played a key role in Emory's 6-3 upset win over second-ranked Washington and Lee University, winning her doubles match 9-8 (9-7) against the fourth-ranked pairing in the Atlantic South region, and her singles match 6-1, 6-0 over the region's 22nd-ranked player. During a 9-0 win over the 26th-ranked University of the South, the junior won her doubles match 8-1 over the 12th-ranked pairing in the region, and her singles match 6-0, 6-2. The Eagles rounded out the week with a 7-0 win at Division I Wofford College, led by Nash's 8-5 win in doubles play and 6-4, 6-2 victory in her singles match. Nash, the second-ranked doubles player and 14th-ranked singles player in the region, improved to 9-7 in singles contests and 9-9 in doubles matches this season. Her performance has helped the Eagles finish their regular season with a 15-4 record.
(Apr. 6) Emory University's Zahra Dawson won both her singles and doubles matches during the fourth-ranked Eagles' 5-4 loss to top-ranked Williams College. Playing in the second doubles match with teammate Lorne McManigle, Dawson claimed an 8-4 victory over her counterparts. In the second singles match, the freshman defeated the ninth-ranked singles player in the Northeast region in straight sets, claiming a 6-0, 6-3 win over Cary Gibson. Dawson, the seventh-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South region, has now won six-straight singles matches, improving to 15-6 overall this season, while raising her doubles record with McManigle to 7-1, and to 13-5 overall. Her performance has helped the Eagles to a 12-4 record this season, and to wins in 10 of their last 12 contests.
(Mar. 30) Emory University's Zahra Dawson went 5-0 in singles play, Lorne McManigle went 3-1, and the pair combined for a 4-1 week in the second-doubles role, helping the Eagles to a perfect 5-0 against ranked NCAA Division III opponents at the Fab Five Tournament. Dawson, ranked seventh in the Atlantic South region in singles play, did not lose a set in a singles match all week, including wins over the West region's seventh-ranked player, and the Central region's third- and sixth-ranked players, while playing out of the first- and second-singles role. McManigle, the top-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South, earned straight-set first-singles victories over the Central region's second-ranked player, the Northeast region's fifth-ranked player, and the West region's sixth-ranked player during the week. As the Eagles' second-doubles team, the pair earned a key 9-8 victory over their University of Chicago counterparts, ranked ninth in the Central region, in addition to victories over the 10th-ranked pairing in the Central region and the 11th-ranked team in the West during the week. Dawson, a freshman, improved to 14-6 in singles play this season, while McManigle, a sophomore, raised her record to 14-8, and the pair improved to 6-1 together this season. Dawson and McManigle helped the seventh-ranked Eagles improve to 12-3 on the season, with victories over fourth-ranked Chicago, fifth-ranked Denison, 10th-ranked Wellesley, 13th-ranked Middlebury and the 14th-ranked University of Redlands at the Fab Five Tournament.
(Mar. 23) Emory University's Laura Callava won her singles match against her counterpart from George Washington University in straight sets, helping the seventh-ranked Eagles to a 5-4 victory over their NCAA Division I opponent. Playing in the sixth singles match, Callava picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her opponent. The freshman raised her record to 6-1 in singles matches this year, including a 3-0 mark during Emory's dual matches. Callava's performance helped the Eagles win their fifth match in their last six outings, and improve to 7-3 overall this season.
(Mar. 9) Emory University freshman Zahra Dawson recorded both a singles and doubles victory during Emory's 8-1 win over Swarthmore College last week. Dawson won her second-singles match in straight sets, picking up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over her counterpart. She also teamed with Lorne McManigle to win the second doubles match 8-2. Dawson is now 9-5 in singles matches and 7-4 in doubles matches. She helped the Eagles improve to 6-3 on the season with the victory.
(Mar. 2) Emory University's Lindsay Reidenbach recorded a perfect 4-0 record in singles play, and a 2-1 record in doubles contests, during four matches last week. During an 8-1 Emory victory over the sixth-ranked University of Mary Washington at the ITA Division III Women's Indoor Team Championships, Reidenbach earned a 6-4, 6-1 win as the fifth-singles player, and an 8-4 win as part of the third doubles team. In a 5-4 Emory win over Brenau University, the sophomore picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win as the fourth singles player, and a 9-7 win for the third doubles team. During the course of her four singles matches last week, she did not lose a set, and raised her overall record this year to 7-3 in singles matches, and to 8-3 in doubles play. Reidenbach helped the fifth-ranked Eagles to a 3-1 record last week, and to a 5-3 record overall this season.
(Feb. 23) Emory University's Kirsten Hillock won both of her singles matches and two of her three doubles matches in three Emory contests during the week. In a 6-3 Emory loss to Clayton State University, ranked 10th in Division II, Hillock teamed with Zahra Dawson to earn an 8-3 win as the second doubles team. The junior earned the only point for the Eagles in their 8-1 loss to NAIA's top-ranked team, Auburn University - Montgomery, winning her sixth-singles match 6-4, 5-7, 11-9, following a close 9-7 loss as part of the second double team. Hillock rounded out her week by winning her doubles match 8-1, and her fifth-singles match 6-0, 6-0, during the Eagles' 9-0 win over Huntingdon College. Hillock improved to 6-1 in singles play and to 5-2 in doubles play, while helping the fifth-ranked Eagles to a 2-2 record this season.
(Feb. 16) Emory University's Daniela Schechter recorded wins out of the second singles and first doubles spots during the fifth-ranked Eagles season-opening victory against Spelman College. Schechter defeated her singles counterpart 6-1, 6-1 to win her second-singles match. In doubles play, the freshman teamed with Lorne McManigle to defeat Spelman's first-doubles squad 8-2. Schechter improved to 4-1 in singles matches and to 3-1 in doubles play this year with the victories. Her play helped the Eagles defeat Spelman 9-0 in the first match of the spring season.
(Oct. 20) Emory University's Lorne McManigle and Sabra Rogers teamed together to finish seventh at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Small College National Championships. After winning the South Region tournament earlier in the month, the duo defeated the doubles team from the College of New Jersey in the seventh-place match. McManigle also participated in the singles tournament, finishing in sixth place. The Eagles will resume intercollegiate competition in the Spring.
(Oct. 6) Emory University's Lorne McManigle won both the singles and doubles titles, while competing at the Wilson/ ITA Southern Championships. In singles play, McManigle claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in the finals over teammate Zahra Dawson to win the bracket. The sophomore, who entered the tournament as the top-seeded player, lost just one set in her six singles matches during the weekend. McManigle paired with Sabra Rogers for doubles play, as the duo defeated the second- and third-seeded teams in the bracket, en route to an 8-5 victory in the finals over Emory teammates Sara Vrabec and Lindsay Reidenbach to clinch the championship. McManigle became the fourth Eagle since 1997 to win both the singles and doubles championships at the Fall ITA Regionals. With the victories, she will advance to the ITA Small College National Championships on October 16th-19th, in Mobile, Ala.
