Emory Finishes Second at the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships

Emory University finished second at the 2010 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships on Thursday, losing 5-0 to Williams College in the championship match at Fredericksburg, VA.

The fourth-seeded Eagles fell into a 3-0 hole to the second-seeded Ephs after doubles play, dropping all three of the matches.  Finishing first was the third doubles match, where Emory’s pairing of Lindsay Reidenbach and Jordan Wylie were shutout 8-0.  In the second doubles match, Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers suffered an 8-2 defeat.  Although putting up a strong fight early on in the first doubles match, Emory’s Zahra Dawson and Lorne McManigle fell as well, losing 8-3.

In singles play, Emory’s Sara Vrabec fell quickly in the sixth singles match, losing 6-0, 6-0.  With Wylie’s 6-4, 6-2 loss in the third singles match, Williams clinched the match victory and their third-consecutive NCAA Championship.

The other four singles matches were left unfinished once the match was clinched.  Dawson was the only Eagle to win a set in singles play, claiming a 7-5 win in the first set of her match.

Emory concluded its successful 2010 campaign with a 22-6 record.  The second place finish was the second in the program’s history, and marked the seventh time the team has finished in the top two in the Nation.

With the team portion of the competition concluded, Emory’s McManigle and Dawson will continue to compete at the individual championships on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Fredericksburg, VA.  Both will be competing in the singles bracket, in addition to pairing together to play in the doubles bracket as well.
