Emory Women's Tennis Opens NCAA Tournament with 5-0 Win over Methodist

The third-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team opened the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships with a 5-0 win over Methodist University on Saturday afternoon in the second round. The University of the South is playing host this weekend for the opening rounds.

The Eagles (14-6) advance to face 13th-ranked Washington and Lee University (21-5) in the third round on Sunday at 11:00 AM EST with the winner moving onto the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals on May 22nd in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Generals were 5-3 winners over Sewanee earlier on Saturday.

The Eagles' top two doubles pairings began the match with a blazing start, taking both matches by 8-0 scores. Junior Bridget Harding and senior Katarina Su downed Sam Munze and Jenna Landis on court one with senior Michelle Satterfield and sophomore Daniela Lopez besting Ashton Walker and Davi Barbour on court two. At third doubles, seniors Michelle DeMeo and Paula Castro erased a 4-2 deficit, winning by an 8-5 decision over Riley Zopp and Audrey Greeson, to finish off the doubles sweep.

Needing just two points to close out the match, Castro dispatched Barbour in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles before senior Melissa Goodman clinched the match at third singles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Munze.

Emory led in all four remaining singles matches when play was halted: Satterfield at first singles (6-2, 1-0), Lopez at second singles (6-0, 5-0), freshman Emma Perelman at fifth singles (6-3) and freshman Elaine Vernoff at sixth singles (7-6 (3)).
