No. 2 Women's Tennis Opens Spring Slate against Georgia State and Coastal Carolina

The No. 2-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team opens the spring season this weekend, hosting Division I foes Georgia State University and Coastal Carolina University.

Weather permitting, both matches will be broadcasted live on emoryathletics.com and can be found here: http://www.emoryathletics.com/information/webcasts. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.

Georgia State enters the weekend 1-3 on the season, defeating UL-Monroe, 4-1, on January 20th and dropping matches to Auburn, Oklahoma and Oregon. Coastal Carolina is 1-1 through two matches this spring, losing to Furman in the opener before topping UNC-Wilmington its last time out on February 1st. Prior to their meeting with the Eagles on Sunday, the Chanticleers will battle GSU on Saturday afternoon at the WoodPEC.

Saturday versus Georgia State marks Emory's first dual match of the season and will be the 29th meeting all-time against the Panthers and first since 2011. GSU holds a slight advantage in the series, 14-12, and has won three straight. Sunday's matchup against Coastal is the fourth meeting between the two programs with Emory leading the series, 2-1. CCU pulled out the narrow victory last season, edging the Eagles by a score of 4-3.

Emory is coming off a 2017 season in which it went 17-7 and advanced to its fifth straight national title match. The Eagles had a strong showing during the fall campaign, highlighted by freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and senior Bridget Harding. Gonzalez-Rico went 15-3 in singles which included advancing to the ITA Division III title match. Harding posted a 12-2 singles record and reached the finals of the ITA South Regional. The duo added a 12-4 ledger in doubles action playing together and made it to the ITA D-III title match.

Gonzalez-Rico leads four players ranked inside the national top-50 singles rankings, positioned in the No. 2 position. Harding comes in ranked seventh followed by junior Daniela Lopez (#28) and freshman Stephanie Taylor (T-50th).

The Eagles also have a pair of doubles teams ranked inside the country's top-25 with Harding and Gonzalez-Rico ranked second and Lopez and freshman Defne Olcay ranked 21st.
