Women's Tennis Tops Sewanee, 5-0, to Reach NCAA Quarterfinals

The Emory University Women's Tennis team has advanced to its 11th consecutive NCAA Quarterfinals and 28th overall following a 5-0 victory over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon in the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Emory took care of business in doubles play, sweeping all three matches to begin the match with a 3-0 lead. At first doubles, senior Bridget Harding and freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico continued their unbeaten streak, upping their winning streak to 19 matches with an 8-1 decision. The win gave the duo 31 victories on the season, one shy of tying the program record for doubles wins in a single season.

The Eagles added victories on court two with senior Anna Fuhr and freshman Stephanie Taylor posting the 8-5 win and on court three with junior Daniela Lopez and freshman Katie Chang teaming up for the 8-3 triumph.

In singles action, Harding and Taylor registered the decisive match points with Harding earning the 6-3, 6-2 win on court two and Taylor recording the 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.

At the conclusion of the match, the Eagles held leads in the remaining four matches with Gonzalez-Rico in front (7-5, 1-0) on court one, Lopez leading 7-5 on court three, Fuhr at fourth singles (6-1, 4-3) and freshman Defne Olcay at fifth singles (5-4).

The Eagles, winners of 10 straight matches and a 15-4 overall record, will face fellow UAA member the University of Chicago in the Round of Eight next Monday, May 21st, at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.
