Women's Tennis Opens ITA Grass Court Invitational on Friday

The Emory University Women's Tennis team opened the fall portion of the 2018-19 season Friday afternoon with several members of the team taking part in the first annual ITA Grass Court Invitational played at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

In singles, the Eagles went 4-1 in matches on the day, highlighted by sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and senior Daniela Lopez performances in the Helena Sukova flight. Both Eagles recorded straight set victories as Gonzalez-Rico topped Carnegie Mellon's Jamie Vizelman 7-5, 6-3 and Lopez defeated in CMU's Vinaya Rao 6-3, 6-1.

In the Virginia Wade singles flight, sophomore Defne Olcay beat Chicago's Nicole Semonov in three sets, rallying from a first set defeat to win 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10). Freshman Lauren Yoon collected her first collegiate win, knocking off CMU's Courtney Ollis in straight sets, 6-4 6-4. Freshman Jessica Fatemi fell in three sets to CMU's Melissa Strome 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (8).

In doubles play, the Eagles went 1-1 on the day with the triumph coming from Lopez and freshman Emma Cartledge in the Bueno/Court flight, besting Chicago's Alyssa Rudin and Daryn Ellison, 8-3. Washington and Lee's Georgia Wright and Taylor Garcia handed Emory its lone loss on Friday, beating Gonzalez-Rico and sophomore Stephanie Taylor 8-4.

The Grass Court Invitational continues on Saturday with singles matches beginning at 10am EST.
