Women's Tennis Continues Strong Singles Play at ITA Grass Court Invitational

The Emory University Women's Tennis program continued the ITA Grass Court Invitational on Saturday at the International Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

In the Helena Sukova Women's Singles Flight, sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and senior Daniela Lopez advanced to the title match with victories over Washington and Lee opponents. Gonzalez-Rico recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win Georgia Wright while Lopez bested Taylor Garcia 6-1, 6-3.

In the Virginia Wade flight, the Eagles will occupy both spots in the title match on Sunday as sophomore Defne Olcay and freshman Lauren Yoon reached the finals of the draw. Olcay earned a straight win against Carnegie Mellon's Melissa Strome 6-4, 6-3 and Yoon topped Chicago's Annika Pandey in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (9-7). Freshman Jessica Fatemi added a win in the consolation round, beating Chicago's Nicole Semonov 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Lopez and freshman Emma Cartledge defeated CMU's Vizelman/Ollis in the finals of the Navratilova/Shriver Flight by an 8-3 margin to highlight the Eagles in doubles play on the afternoon.

The ITA Grass Court Invitational concludes action Sunday with matches beginning at 10:00 AM.
