Women's Tennis Puts Forth Solid Showing in Singles at Georgia Southern Shootout

After competing in two rounds of doubles on Friday, the Emory University Women's Tennis team took part in a pair of rounds in singles on Saturday as the Georgia Southern Shootout continued in Statesboro, GA.

A trio of Eagles notched two victories on the afternoon with sophomore Katie Chang and freshman Christina Watson advancing to the finals in their respective draws. Chang topped players from SCAD (6-1, 6-0) and Georgia State (6-3, 6-0) while Watson needed three sets in both of her wins as she bested Mercer's Maeva Roquebert 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 and Georgia Southern's Elizabeth Goines 1-6, 6-4, 10-7. Sophomore Sasha Hartje is in good position to win her ERK round robin draw following her two wins on Saturday as she defeated SCAD's Candance Mortier 6-3, 6-1 and North Carolina A&T's Camryn Thompson 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Stephanie Taylor and freshman Emma Cartledge each advanced to the semifinals before falling to the top seed of their respective draws. Taylor earned a 7-5, 6-3 decision against Winthrop's Alya Mourad but fell 7-6 (3), 6-1 to Appalachian State's Rebecca Morse. Cartledge topped Georgia State's Arielle Nealy 6-2, 6-2 but was upended 4-6, 6-4, 8-10 by App State's Teodora Sevo.

Senior Daniela Lopez, sophomore Defne Olcay and freshman Lauren Yoon all dropped first round matches but rebounded in the consolation bracket. Lopez defeated Kennesaw State's Juliana Castellanoes 6-3, 6-0, Olcay beat KSU's Lara Mehlsam 6-1, 6-2 and Yoon got past SCAD's Tova Tobrand 6-1, 4-6, 11-9.

The Georgia Southern Shootout wraps up on Sunday with the final rounds of the doubles and singles competitions beginning at 10:00 AM.
