After being rained out all day on Friday, the Emory University Women's Tennis team opened the Wofford Invitational on a strong note on Saturday, going 15-5 combined in singles and 3-1 in doubles.
In singles, the Eagles saw six players reach the finals of their respective draws following two rounds of competition. In the main draw, sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico earned 6-2, 7-5 and 5-7, 6-2, 10-3 decisions while senior Daniela Lopez advanced to the B draw final with 6-2, 7-5 and 1-6, 6-2, 10-3 triumphs. Freshman Lauren Yoon and sophomore Katie Chang each reached the finals of their respective draws with a pair of straight sets wins as Yoon won her two matches by 6-2, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-3 margins and Chang posted 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 victories. Freshmen Jessica Fatemi and Emma Cartledge rounded out the Emory players reaching finals on Saturday as Fatemi won her two matches 6-3, 6-0 and 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 and Cartledge collected 6-2, 6-2 and 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 wins.
In doubles, the Eagles dropped just one match in the four that were contested on the day with Gonzalez-Rico/Fatemi advancing past Arkansas State 6-4, Lopez/Catledge defeating Radford 6-2 and Yoon and sophomore Sasha Hartje blanking WVSU 6-0.
The Wofford Invitational concludes on Sunday morning with the finals and consolation rounds in singles and semifinals and finals in doubles. Action begins in Spartanburg, SC at 8:00 AM. Other teams competing at the invite include Wofford, Arkansas State, Brenau, Bluefield State, West Virginia State, UNC-Asheville, Radford, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State and Gardner-Webb.
