Women's Tennis Breezes Past SCAD and Brenau to Open Spring Season

The Emory University Women's Tennis team breezed to quick victories Friday afternoon over SCAD-Atlanta and Brenau University to begin the spring season. The Eagles defeated SCAD by an 8-1 count before sweeping Brenau, 9-0, on the outdoor courts at the WoodPEC.

In the first match of the day, the Eagles saw 8-1 wins from their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tandems as sophomore Stephanie Taylor and freshman Christina Watson won on court two and junior Emma Perelman and freshman Lauren Yoon were victorious on court three.

In singles play, the Eagles collected straight set victories on all six courts with sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico winning 6-2, 6-1 at first singles, Taylor winning 6-4, 6-2 at second singles, Yoon was a 6-2, 6-2 winner on court three. At fourth and fifth singles, freshman Jessica Fatemi and Perelman each earned 6-0, 6-2 decisions and on court six, Watson blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Emory opened the Brenau match with decisive wins in all three doubles matches. Gonzalez-Rico and sophomore Defne Olcay were 8-1 winners at first doubles with Watson and Fatemi edging out an 8-7 triumph on court two and freshman Emma Cartledge and sophomore Katie Chang picking up an 8-5 victory on court three.

The Eagles again recorded straight set wins in all six singles matches, this time with Olcay registering the win at first singles 6-1, 6-2, Yoon at second singles 6-4, 6-4, Fatemi on court three 6-2, 6-2, Taylor on court four 6-3, 6-3, Perelman on court five 6-1, retired and Chang on court six 6-1, 6-1.

Emory is back on the courts this Wednesday night with a road tilt against NAIA power Georgia Gwinnett College. First serve from Lawrenceville, GA is set for 3:00 PM.
