Women's Tennis Defeats Sewanee, 9-0, in ITA National Indoors Opener

The Emory University Women's Tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the ITA National Indoor Championship with a convincing 9-0 victory over Sewanee Friday evening in Nashville, TN.

In doubles, senior Daniela Lopez and freshman Emma Cartledge opened the match with an 8-1 win on court two before sophomores Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Defne Olcay followed with the 8-3 victory on court one. Sophomore Stephanie Taylor and freshman Christina Watson gave the Eagles the sweep, doubling up their Tiger counterparts, 8-4.

In singles, Emory did not drop a set for the fourth consecutive match en route to the shutout win. Gonzalez-Rico claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles with doubles teammate Olcay posting the 6-3, 6-0 victory at second singles. Freshman Lauren Yoon had a close first set, going to a tiebreak, but rebounded nicely in set two for the 7-6, 6-1 win on court three. Cartledge and Taylor each recorded second set shutouts as Cartledge was a 6-2, 6-0 winner on court four while Taylor won 6-4, 6-0 on court five. Freshman Jessica Fatemi rounded out the Emory winners at sixth singles with the 6-0, 6-4 triumph.

The Eagles will be making their third straight trip to the national indoor semifinals and will face either Pomona-Pitzer or Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 PM CST.
