Five members of the Emory University women's tennis team were named to the 2019 University Athletic Association All-Association team as announced Monday morning by the league office.
Sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico highlights the group selected as the Pinecrest, FL native garners Player of the Year honors. In addition, Gonzalez-Rico was tabbed to the First Team for first singles as well as first doubles with classmate Defne Olcay.
Joining Gonzalez-Rico and Olcay on the UAA First Team were senior Daniela Lopez and freshman Jessica Fatemi. The duo was named to the conference's First Team for singles and at second doubles. Freshman Emma Cartledge rounds out the Eagles honorees as she was placed on the All-UAA Second Team for fifth singles.
Gonzalez-Rico, the 2018 UAA Rookie of the Year, followed up her stellar freshman season with another strong showing as a sophomore, compiling a team-leading 27 singles victories including a 15-1 record at first singles during dual matches. In doubles, she has recorded 20 wins with 14 coming with Olcay in the spring. The tandem added a 3-0 record in conference matches to help the Eagles win their seventh UAA title in April and were 2-0 over the weekend during the NCAA regionals.
Lopez and Fatemi also posted a 3-0 record during the UAA tournament to earn a berth on the All-UAA First Team. The duo has recorded a 6-1 record since joining forces earlier this spring and has won four straight matches.
In singles, Lopez and Fatemi have joined Gonzalez-Rico as 20-match winners with Lopez posting an overall record of 20-6 (10-3 in dual matches) while Fatemi has been a key fixture in the singles lineup, going 22-3 overall and registering a 15-1 mark in the spring.
Cartledge currently ranks tied for third on the team with 22 singles victories as she has recorded a singles record of 22-7 and is 14-4 in dual matches. Cartledge went 2-1 in singles play during UAA contests to earn a berth on the All-UAA Second Team.
The Eagles will be in search of their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA Division III title match when the final rounds get underway on Monday, May 20th, at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Eagles are set to face Chicago in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the UAA Championship where Emory defeated the Maroons by a 5-4 decision.
