NATIONAL CHAMPION! - Gonzalez-Rico Wins NCAA Division III Singles Title in Straight Sets

Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico capped off her dominant sophomore season by winning the NCAA Division III Women's Singles National Championship Sunday afternoon at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Gonzalez-Rico defeated Wesleyan's Venia Yeung in straight sets to win the title by a 6-4, 6-3 decision. After falling behind 4-2 in the opening set, she stormed back to win the final four games in the set. Gonzalez-Rico opened the second set with back-to-back points before the two players traded holds for the next four games to give Gonzalez-Rico the 4-2 edge. She was able to break Yeung to move in front 5-2 but Yeung stayed alive with a break of her own. With Yeung serving, Gonzalez-Rico broke back to clinch the title.

The Pinecrest, Florida native becomes just the fourth Eagle in women's tennis history to win a national title in singles as she joins Mary Ellen Gordon (2003 & 2004), Lorne McManigle (2009) and Gabrielle Clark (2012 & 2014) to accomplish the feat.

Gonzalez-Rico closes out her tremendous sophomore campaign with a 34-5 overall record, tying Gordon for the program's single-season record for victories. She went 22-1 during the spring slate including a perfect 19-0 record against Division III competition and dropped just six sets total through the entirety of the spring season.
