Emory Women's Tennis Takes Two from Sewanee

The Emory University women's tennis team put forth a great team effort Saturday afternoon in its return to competition, sweeping a doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers. The Eagles dropped just one match total across the two matches, defeating the Tigers by scores of 9-0 and 8-1.

In the first match, the Eagles opened doubles play with commanding wins at the second and third positions and a narrow win at first doubles. Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Katie Chang pulled off the 8-7 (2) victory on court one while Christina Watson and Stephanie Taylor earned the 8-2 win on court two and Ana Cristina Perez and Katelyn Thomas were 8-1 winners on court three.

In singles play, five of the six matches were decided in straight sets. Winning by straight sets were Gonzalez-Rico at first singles (6-0, 6-1), Watson on court two (6-3, 6-4), Jessica Fatemi at fourth singles (6-0, 6-2), Alexa Goetz at fifth singles (6-2, 6-1) and Perez on court six (6-1, 6-0). At third singles, Emma Cartledge rallied from a dropped first set to win 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

In the second match of the day, the Eagles lineup saw a sweep in doubles action and victories in five of the six singles matches.

Winning in doubles play were Watson and Taylor at the first position (8-5), Gonzalez-Rico and Chang on court two (8-1) and Perez and Thomas on court three (8-3).

In singles, the Eagles featured the same singles lineup as match one with Gonzalez-Rico posting a 6-0, 6-0 win at the first position, Watson winning 6-2, 6-1 on court two, Fatemi 7-6 (6), 6-1 at the fourth position, Goetz 6-4, 6-4 at fifth singles and Perez rounding things out with the 6-2, 6-1 win on court six.

Emory is scheduled to be off next weekend before returning to action in April with a match at Georgia Southern on Sunday, April 4th.
