Georgia Gwinnett Tops Emory Women's Tennis at Home

The Emory University women's tennis team fell to NAIA foe Georgia Gwinnett College, 8-1, Friday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

The match began with the Eagles taking one of the three doubles courts. Emory opened the scoring with the No. 1 doubles team of Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Katie Chang posting an 8-3 victory to remain unbeaten on the season with a 6-0 record. The Grizzlies answered with wins on courts two and three, defeating Christina Watson and Stephanie Taylor, 8-4, at the No. 2 position and topping Ana Cristina Perez and Lauren Yoon in a tie breaker, 8-7 (3), on the third court.

In singles, Emory fought hard with four of the six matches needing third sets to decide a winner. Following straight set wins by GGC over Yoon (6-1, 6-2) and Sam Falcon (6-2, 6-1) on courts five and six, the match was decided with an intense three setter on court one. Gonzalez-Rico won the first set 6-1 over Maria Genovese before dropping the next two 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the win for the visitors.

The match concluded with three setters on courts two, three and four. Taylor won her first set at the third position 7-6 (4) before falling 6-2 and 10-4. On court four, Perez fell 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 and on court two, Watson was a first set winner, 6-3, prior to losing the next two 6-2, 6-3.

The Eagles, now standing at 4-3, take on fellow University Athletic Association member Washington University Sunday afternoon. The match will take place at the Adams Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, TN starting at 1:00 PM.
