The Emory University women's tennis team opened the fall portion of the schedule Friday afternoon, taking on Georgia Gwinnett College in a matchup featuring a pair of 2021 national champions. The Grizzlies edged out the Eagles by a 6-1 decision in Lawrenceville, GA.

The match began with GGC earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, defeating sophomore Xuanjin Li and junior Alexa Goetz, 6-2, at the first position and sophomore Ana Cristina Perez and senior Lauren Yoon, 6-2, at the third spot. Senior Christina Watson and freshman Eliza McPherron helped the Eagles avoid the doubles sweep, posting a 6-3 win on court two.

In singles play, the Grizzlies were triumphant in straight sets on five of the six courts to clinch the win. Senior Emma Cartledge notched the lone point for Emory however with her straight set win on court four, defeating Iryna Lysykh 6-3, 6-4.

The Eagles now turn to tournament play for the remainder of the fall slate, beginning first with the ITA South Regional Championship next weekend, October 1-3, at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN.
