Women's Tennis Coasts Past Piedmont in NCAA Second Round

The Emory University women's tennis team coasted to a second round win Saturday morning, taking down Piedmont University at the WoodPEC in Atlanta, GA.

The Eagles advanced to the third round following the 5-0 victory and will oppose either Sewanee or Otterbein University in the regional final Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:00 PM.

The doubles pairing of freshman Eliza McPherron and senior Lauren Yoon opened the match, making quick work on court three to win 8-1. Senior Christina Watson and sophomore Ana Cristina Perez followed suit with the 8-2 win on court one. After moving ahead 7-1, senior Emma Cartledge and junior Alexa Goetz staved off a mini-Piedmont rally to earn the doubles sweep with their 8-4 victory at the second position.

Junior Stephanie Shulman was the first to reach a conclusion in singles as she was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at the third spot. Needing just one more win to clinch the match, Cartledge came through at the No. 1 position with her 6-1, 6-0 decision.

At the conclusion of the match, the Eagles held leads on the four remaining courts: Watson at second singles (6-4), Goetz at fourth singles (6-0, 5-1), Yoon at fifth singles (6-3, 2-1) and sophomore Sam Falcon on the sixth line (6-0, 4-1).
