Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Semifinals with 5-3 Win on Sunday

The Emory University women's tennis team picked up a huge 5-3 win against the Wesleyan Cardinals on Sunday afternoon in the national quarterfinals in Orlando, Florida.

The Eagles register their 14th win of the season, their third straight victory, to advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, May 16 at 1 pm where they will face the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Junior Ana Cristina Perez and freshman Emily Kantrovitz picked up the Eagles' only double point of the day with their third straight doubles win. They posted an 8-6 victory on court one to put Emory in the match. Freshman Izzy Antanavicius and senior Alexa Goetz fell 8-5 in the two spot while sophomore Eliza McPherron and freshman Iris Berman fell on court three by an 8-4 decision.

The Eagles came back to dominate singles taking four matchups to win the match and advance to the semifinals. Kantrovitz took her 18th singles match of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 decision on two followed by a 6-1, 6-2 win on three from Perez. Berman picked up the fourth point for the Eagles following a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court five.

With a 4-3 lead and two matches to go, junior Ilayda Baykan picked up the fifth point for Emory after a leg injury from her opponent decided the final point. Baykan took a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win on court four to secure the win for the Eagles. Senior Alexa Goetz was held unfinished on court six at the end of the match.
