Women’s Tennis Finishes Season in National Semifinals

The Emory University women's tennis team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the national semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

The Eagles fell to an early 2-1 margin after the doubles round with senior Alexa Goetz and freshman Izzy Antanavicius taking their match with an 8-4 decision. The duo of junior Ana Cristina Perez and freshman Emily Kantrovitz fought until the end with a narrow 8-7 defeat on one. Freshman Iris Berman and sophomore Eliza McPherron fell from an 8-4 result on three.

Claremont controlled singles taking three quick matches on courts one, two and six over senior Stephanie Shulman (6-2, 6-2), Kantrovitz (6-0, 6-3) and Goetz (6-2, 6-0). The Athenas held leads over junior Ilayda Baykan (6-3, 3-2) and Berman (6-5) at the end of the match while Perez started to mount a comeback (6-3, 2-1) on court three.

The loss concludes the Eagles' 2022-23 season with a 14-6 record while the Athenas (26-1) advance to the national championship match on May 17 to face the Chicago Maroons.

With the team season finished, Shulman (singles) and Perez/Kantrovitz (doubles) turn their attention to the NCAA Individual Championships that will start on Friday, May 19 in Orlando.
