Three Eagles Earn All-UAA Honors on Day One of UAA Indoor Championships

The Emory University men's and women's track and field teams finished day one of the University Athletic Association Indoor Championships at The Armory in New York, NY, where three Eagles on the women's team earned All-UAA honors for their performances.

Sophomore Alex Devaux set a new personal-record and produced the ninth-longest weight throw distance in school history on Saturday. Her mark of 15.09 gave her second place in the women's weight throw, allowed her to claim All-UAA accolades, and added eight points to her team's total. Also scoring in the event were junior Laura Sheckter (14.41m, 5pts), who placed in fourth, and Kemdi Okafor (13.20m, 3 pts.), who landed in sixth.

After finishing in fourth-place in the pole vault event at two out of her three UAA Indoor Championships, senior Isabel Saridakis finally made her way onto the podium, taking third-place and securing All-UAA kudos. Saridakis cleared the bar set at 3.68m and added six points to the women's team total.

In the long jump, junior Rebekah Bondi rose to the occasion and established a new personal-best distance of 5.57m, which was good enough to give her third-place and a spot on the All-UAA squad. Bondi's leap now stands as the third-farthest indoor mark in Emory history and supplied her team with six more points. Senior Nyla Lindo also competed in the long jump, as she stretched the tape to a distance of 5.13m, placed in eighth, and accrued one point for Emory.

On the track, the women's team saw a collection of five Eagles post marks that were strong enough to qualify them for the final heats to be held tomorrow. The Emory women raced very well in the 60m Dash, as freshman Ella Lavelle, junior Michelle Rosenblum, and Bondi all sprinted to times that allow them to advance. Bondi will also be appearing in the finals of the 200m Dash after she took sixth-place in the preliminary heats with a time of 25.99. Sophomore Hannah Lansberry crossed the finish after 59.49 in the 400m Dash, finishing with the seventh-best time in the preliminaries and granting her the opportunity to compete for the title tomorrow. In her first year of collegiate track, freshman Leah Clark obtained a point for the Eagles by placing in seventh in the 5000m Run (18.10.59).

On the men's side, several Eagles were able to either qualify for the final heats or score points. Sophomore Ben Kronman jumped a distance of 6.32m in the long jump, a length that left him in sixth-place and attributed three points to his team. Junior Liam Fost and senior Alex Rand will both be featured in the Sunday heat of the men's 400m Dash. Fost raced to a time of 50.00 (4th-place), while Rand turned in a effort of 50.86 (6th-place). A pair of Eagles also emerged as finalists from the preliminary heats of the 800m Run. Junior Jacob Hedgepeth (1:55.63, 6th-place) slightly edged sophomore Jon Marcus (1:55.77, 7th-place) in that race, but both will get the chance to race for the event championship tomorrow. Additionally, freshman Tommy Davis broke through the line in seventh-place in the 60m Dash after 7.14 seconds, and in eighth-place in the 200m Dash after 22.68 seconds to earn the right to participate in the final heats of both races on Sunday.

The Emory women's team will head into Sunday's slate of action in third-place with 34.33 points, while the men will carry seven points into tomorrow's competition. The University of Chicago is off to a strong start as it leads the field of teams in the women's contest with 69.33 points. Washington University-St. Louis has a handle on the men's competition as they have 58 points entering the final day of events.
