Emory Volleyball Splits Sunday UAA RR II Matches

The No. 4-ranked Emory volleyball team closed out play at the University Athletic Association Round Robin II on Sunday by splitting a pair of contests. The Eagles started out with a 3-0 verdict (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) over NYU before No. 10 Carnegie Mellon held on for a 3-2 triumph (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13).  Emory now stands 19-5 in overall play, 4-3 in the league.  Hosting the UAA Round Robin II was the University of Chicago.

Emory hit .356 (46-9—104) against NYU while the Violets finished with an effort of .149 (33-16—114). Sophomore Sara Carr sparked the Eagles' attack, blasting out a match-high 18 kills and hitting .515 (18-1—33).  Carr also chipped in eight digs and two blocks.  Freshman Leah Saunders and sophomore Morgan McKnight each finished with 10 terminations and were extremely efficient in their hitting opportunities with Saunders posting a. 471 (10-2—17) attack percentage and McKnight a showing of .400 (10-0—25).  Sophomore Sarah Porter registered 24 assists, seven digs and a pair of service aces while sophomore Elyse Thompson recorded a match-leading 14 digs.

After the smoke had cleared following the five-set marathon, Emory and Carnegie Mellon finished with nearly identical team stats.  The Tartans held a slight edge in hitting percentage, .227 (62-20—185) to Emory's .224 (68-23—201), digs (94-93) and total blocks, 8-7, while the Eagles totaled eight service aces to CMU's four. Carr closed out a solid weekend of action by leading all players with a career-high 22 kills, her second career outing in that category she turned in at the RRII, and chipped in 18 digs, her third-highest career total, and a pair of aces. McKnight came through with 12 terminations, her 14th double-digit of the season, while Saunders rang up 11 successful attack attempts. Sophomore Savannah Bush, pressed into service with injuries to Sydney Leimach and Maggie Rimmel putting them on the shelf, finished with six kills and a match-high six (1-5) total blocks.  Elyse Thompson paced the squad with 30 digs, her third match this season with that total or higher.

Emory returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 22, when it travels to the campus of Birmingham Southern to tackle Hendrix College (2:30 pm EDT) and the host Panthers (5:00 pm EDT).
