Emory Volleyball Tops Berry And Webster On Final Day Of National Invitational

The No. 8-ranked Emory volleyball team closed out a 4-0 weekend of action following a pair of wins on the final day of its National Invitational Tournament.  The Eagles swept both Berry College (25-21, 25-19, 31-29) and Webster University (25-15, 25-17, 25-15), raising their overall record to 25-5.  Emory is now 12-0 at home this season.

After being swept at Berry almost three weeks ago, Emory turned the tables on the visiting Vikings, hitting .240 (46-15—129) vs. BC's mark of .126 (34-19—119).  Both teams finished with 59 digs while Berry held a 5-4 edge in total blocks. The Eagles came out firing on all cylinders during the first two sets, hitting a combined .300 (28-7—70) while limiting the Vikings to .093 (20-14—64).  In an epic third game, Emory found itself trailing by 12-7 count at one point and later fought off five set points before eventually closing out the contest.  Sophomore Sara Carr led all players with 14 kills and chipped in eight digs.  Sophomore Morgan McKnight was the squad's other double-figure terminator with 10 kills to go along with a fine .429 hitting effort (10-1—21).  Freshman Leah Saunders hit an efficient .316 on the strength of eight kills with two miscues in 19 swings.  Sophomore Elyse Thompson came up with a team-high 19 digs and recorded four of the team's nine service aces.  Junior Mila Barzdukas helped the defensive effort 11 digs and also dished out three aces.

The Eagles' offense clicked against Webster as they hit .396 (50-10—101), their second-best mark of the campaign.  Carr, McKnight and Saunders all tied for match honors with 10 kills each, with McKnight hitting .474 (10-1—19), Saunders .333 (10-4—18) and Carr .308 (10-2—26).  Junior Karissa Dzurik pounded out nine kills and registered an impressive .571 hitting percentage (9-1—14).  Emory saw three players record double-figure digs en route to a final match advantage of 56-39, led by Thompson's 16 which boosted her season total to 521, good for an eighth-place tie on the program's seasonal ladder. Carr added 13 digs while Barzdukas totaled 10.  Senior Hannah Billings and sophomore Sarah Porter dished out 24 and 18 assists, respectively.

Emory returns to action next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 3-4) when it hosts the University Athletic Association Championships.  The Eagles enter the Championships as the No. 4 seed and will square off against No. 5 seed Case Western Reserve on Friday at 2:00 pm.
