Emory Volleyball Posts Thursday Evening Win vs. Oglethorpe

The No. 1-ranked Emory University volleyball team kicked off a five-match home stand with a Thursday evening home win over crosstown foe Oglethorpe University.  The Eagles captured their sixth straight match and boosted their overall record to 12-1 following a 3-0 triumph (27-25, 25-11, 25-11) over the Stormy Petrels who fell to 5-8.

Emory finished the contest hitting .275 (40-12—102) compared to OU's .086 (27-19—93), the 12th time this year it held an edge in that category.  The tandem of junior Leah Saunders and senior Morgan McKnight accounted for 23 of the squad's 40 terminations with Saunders pounding out 13, her fifth double-digit performance of the campaign, while McKnight tallied 10 successful attack attempts, the eighth time she reached the double-figure plateau.  Both players were efficient throughout the match with Saunders checking in with a .360 hitting percentage (13-4—25) while McKnight claimed a .333 mark (19-3—21).

Senior Elyse Thompson helped Emory to a 41-39 advantage in digs with a match-high 13, while junior middle Maggie Rimmel paced all players with five (1-4) total blocks.

After seeing Oglethorpe hit .241 in the opening set, the Emory defense buckled down and limited the Petrels to .015 over the final two games. The Eagles' offense perked up over that stretch as well, hitting .300 (24-4—60).

Emory returns to action next Wednesday (Oct. 2) when it entertains Lee University in a 6:00 pm start.
