Emory Volleyball Sweeps At Oglethorpe

The No. 6-ranked Emory volleyball team continued its winning ways Wednesday evening, travelling to crosstown foe Oglethorpe University and sweeping the Stormy Petrels.  The Eagles upped their record to 11-2 following a 25-19, 25-16, 26-24 decision over OU who slipped to 6-5.

Freshman middle Madison Cail was the lone Emory player to register double-kills kills, finishing with 10 and hitting .692 in the process (10-1—13) which represented her seventh outing of the campaign with an attack percentage of .300 or higher.  Cail also tied for match honors with five total blocks.  Freshman Alana Dawson hit .368 on the strength of nine terminations and two errors in 19 swings while senior Tara Martin produced eight successful attack attempts.

In the third set, a kill by Cail pushed the Eagles to a 16-10 lead.  The Petrels then responded with a 6-1 spurt that drew them to within a 17-16 margin.  After an Emory point, Oglethorpe rattled off seven of the game's next eight points to assume a 23-19 advantage.  A kill by Dawson followed by an OU hitting error sliced Emory's deficit in half, but an Emory hitting error put the hosts one point from forcing a fourth set.  However, the Eagles staved off that prospect by closing out the game and subsequently the match with five unanswered points, capped by a termination from sophomore Carly Wallace, to win their fifth straight match.

Emory ended the evening hitting .209 (39-20—91) compared to OU's .056 (24-19—90).  The Eagles held a 42-27 cushion in digs, with Tara Martin and freshman Deborah Hong leading the squad with nine each, while the Petrels finished with an 8-6 margin in total blocks.

Emory returns to action next Tuesday (Sept. 28) when it closes out the month by hosting Lee University in a 6:00 pm start.
