Emory Women's Cross Country Turns In Strong Showings

The Emory women's cross country program split up its squad on Saturday and came through with solid efforts at a pair of meets, competing at the Greater Louisville Classic and the JSU Foothills Invitational in Oxford, Alabama.

At the Louisville Classic, which was held at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, the site of the 2016 D-III National Championships, the No. 16-ranked Eagles finished third out of 39 teams with 128 points.  Taking home the top spot was No. 14 Hope College with 103 points while Bates College was runner-up with 108 points.  No. 22 St. Thomas (MN) held down the fourth slot with 138 points.

Junior Gabrielle Stravach led the Emory pack, covering the 6K course in a time of 22:23 which represented her second-best career time while ranking 17th out of 332 runners.  Junior Tru Powell established a personal-best mark with an effort of 22:27, good for the No. 18 position overall, while junior Megan Waples also recorded a personal-best showing of 22:49 that placed her 30th.  Rounding out the team's scorers were senior Sophie Cemaj (22:51, 33rd) and freshman Meredith Hughes (22:52, 35th).

Competing in the White Division (non D-I schools) of the JSU Foothills Invitational, Emory turned in a fourth-place effort out of 10 teams, finishing with 126 points.  Montevallo raced to first-place honors with 18 points with North Georgia (53 pts.) and Tennessee Wesleyan (86 pts.) the next two teams.

Freshman Isabelle Robbins was the Eagles' top finisher, registering a 5K time of 19:31 that ranked 44th out of 165 entries (both the Red and White Divisions were combined for individual finishers).  Junior Dyess Verfurth clocked a 19:57 that was second on the team and 58th overall.  Junior Hanna Sadeegh-Vaziri (20:17, 75th), sophomore Paige Lesslauer (20:21, 78th) and junior Erica Fischer (20:31, 82nd) rounded out the team's scorers.

Emory returns to action on October 15 when it sends representatives to the Inter-Regional Border Battle in Glassboro, New Jersey and the Berry Invitational.
