Emory Women's Cross Country Shines At Rowan And Berry Meets

The Emory women's cross country program sent contingents of runners to competitions at the Rowan University Border Clash and the Berry College Invitational, with both squads coming through with excellent results.

At the Rowan Border Clash, the No. 21-ranked women's side recorded an eight-place finish out of 45 teams with a total of 304 points. Taking home the No. 1 spot was No. 4-ranked Johns Hopkins with 70 points while No. 2 MIT claimed runner-up status with 134 points.  No. 1 SUNY Geneseo (136 pts.), No. 14 Ithaca (211 pts.) and No. 23 Oneonta (263 pts.) rounded out the top five. 

All ten Emory runners who took part in the event finished with personal-best 6K times, headlined by junior Gabrielle Stravach who covered the course in 21:33, good for 22nd position out of 386 entries.  Senior Mia Eisenhandler was the second Eagle runner to cross the finish line and 64th overall with an effort of 22:16.  Junior Tru Powell (22:23) and sophomore Maeve Andrews (22:24) were the third and fourth members of the Emory pack and ranked 74th and 75th, respectively, while junior Megan Waples closed out the team's scoring effort with a performance of 22:32. Making up the rest of the squad's efforts were senior Sophie Cemaj (22:35, 90th), freshman Meredith Hughes (22:36, 91st), senior Michelle Kagei (22:38, 95th) freshman Porter Verfurth (22:58. 130th) and freshman Morgan Dommisse (23:22).

Meanwhile, at the 6K Berry Invitational, Emory stood fourth out of 19 teams, totaling 146 points.  NCAA Division I member Florida A&M rolled to a first-place finish with 23 points with host Berry the runner-up with 77 points. 

Freshman Isabelle Robbins was Emory's top performer, finishing with a mark of 24:16 that represented a season best and that placed 24th out of 177 contestants. Junior Gabrielle Rudolph (24:27) and sophomore Kaylee Slade (24:31) ranked 30th and 31st overall, respectively, with freshman Tori Spiezo (24:37, 34th) and sophomore Kayla O'Shea (24:48, 38th) accounting for the rest of the team's scorers. Also competing were junior Dyess Verfurth (24:50,pr, 39th), sophomore Paige Lesslauer (25:17, 51st), freshman Ileana Zeissner (25:48, 62nd), junior Erica Fischer (26:00, 73rd), freshman Charlotte Monk (26:21, pr, 81st), freshman Kristina Koh (26:44, 93rd) and senior Kelsey Abbott (27:00).

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host the University Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at McIntosh Reserve Park in nearby Whitesburg.
