Emory Women's Cross Country Third At UAA Championships

The Emory women's cross country team came through a third-place finish at the 30th Annual University Athletic Championships on Saturday.  The meet was held at the McIntosh Reserve Park in Whitesburg, Ga.

The No. 19-ranked Eagles wrapped up the event with 90 points.  No. 4-ranked Washington University came away with its third straight league crown, closing out the meet with 33 points, well ahead of No. 13 Chicago's total of 75 points. Brandeis (96 pts.) and Rochester (106 pts) rounded out the top five.

Juniors Gabrielle Stravach and Tru Powell distinguished themselves with fine outings with both claiming Second Team All-UAA acclaim.  Stravach turned in a 6K time of 22:15, which represented her second-best career mark and that placed ninth overall out of 78 runners.  Powell scored for the team for the fifth time in as many meets, clocking a 22:29 that ranked 14th. Senior Michelle Kagei (22:50) and sophomore Maeve Andrews (22:51) finished 21st and 22nd, respectively, while senior Sophie Cemaj rounded out the Emory scorers with a time of 22:53, good for the No. 24 spot.

Washington University's Aly Wayne earned the UAA Runner of the Year honor after setting the pace for all competitors with an effort of 21:25, the third-fastest winning time in league history (switched to 6,000 meters in 2002).  Khia Kurtenbach of Chicago was runner-up (21:47) while Emily Bryson of Brandeis was third (21:55).

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, November 12, when they head up to Berry College to run at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships.
