The Emory women’s cross country team closed out its 2017 season Saturday at the NCAA D-III Championships. The meet was held at the Principia College North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, Illinois.
The 22nd-ranked Eagles registered a 25th-place finish out of 32 teams with a total of 564 points. No. 1 Johns Hopkins brought home the team title with 96 points while No. 4 UW- Eau Claire claimed runner-up honors with 191 points. No. 6 Washington University was third (202 pts.), and rounding out the top five were No. 2 MIT (210 pts.) and No. 7 Carleton (258 pts.).
Senior Gabrielle Stravach highlighted the Emory effort, racing to All-America honors after finishing 10th overall out of 279 runners with a 6K time of 21:02, both her and the program’s second-fastest mark. Stravach becomes the seventh different Eagle to land All-America accolades and the first since Tamara Surtees (2014). In addition, her 10th-place finish was the school’s second-best individual showing, with Vista Beasley’s third-place finish in 1997 the No. 1 effort.
Freshman Susie Martin checked in as the team’s No. 2 runner, posting a season-best mark of 22:41 that placed 162nd overall (114th scoring spot) Rookie Abby Durfee crossed the finish line in 22:55 (second-best time of the season, scoring in the No. 143 slot. Rounding out the team’s scorers were junior Kayla O’Shea (22:56) and senior Tru Powell (23:02). Other Emory competitors included junior Kaylee Slade (22:24) and freshman Carrie McIntyre (23:36).
Khia Kurtenbach from Chicago topped the field with an effort of 20:39.
