Men's Results
The Emory men's and women's cross country team both posted a fifth-place finish at the 33rd Annual University Athletic Association Championships on Sunday. The event was held at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The No. 22-ranked men's team finished the competition with 111 points. Taking the top spot was host and fourth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University with 39 points. The Tartans edged defending champion and ninth-ranked Washington University by four points. The University of Chicago entered the meet rated as the seventh-best team in the country and ended with 71 points and third place. The only other team to finish ahead of Emory was No. 20-ranked Case Western University, as their 96 points were 12 better than the Eagles' total.
Junior Jack Whetstone once again paced the Emory contingent, crossing the finish line in the No. 8 overall position out of 76 runners with a 8K time of 25:07. Whetsone's finish enabled him to land Second Team All-UAA honors.
Sophomore Spencer Moore (25:27) and junior John Cox (25:35) were the Eagles' second and third finishers, respectively, with their times slotting them 15th and 18th in the field. Sophomore Brett Lucas clocked a 26:00, which was good for the 33rd position, while junior Egan Kattenberg rounded out the team's scorers (26:05, 37th.).
Chicago's Ryan Cutter was the No. 1 finisher in the men's 8K with a time of 24:50.
The 34th-ranked Emory women's team finished the meet with 140 points. Claiming the conference crown for the sixth consecutive year with 24 points was No. 2 Washington University. The Bears placed all of its scoring runners inside the top-10, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. That allowed them to leave the runner-up, seventh-ranked University of Chicago, 29 points off the lead. Rated as the 24th-best team in the country, Rochester University accumulated 100 points, which was good enough to beat the host, Carnegie Mellon University, for fourth-place. The No. 26-ranked Tartans held off Emory by eight points.
Junior Suzie Martin lead her squad, posting a 6K time of 22:26 that ranked 9th out of 76 runners, which gave her Second Team All-UAA Honors. Martin has finished as the Eagles top performer in every meet that she has participated in and this was her fourth race of the season. Junior Carrie McIntyre was the next Emory representative to cross the finish line, clocking a 23:04 that placed 27th in the field. Freshmen Leah Clark (23:09) and Shana Fitzmaurice (23:11) finished 30th and 33rd, respectively, while junior Abby Durfee (23:31, 41st) rounded out the Emory scoring.
Washington's Paige Lawler was the first runner to finish, getting it done in a blistering time of 21:49.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, November 16 when they return to Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tennessee to traverse that course for the second time this season. The Eagles last ran at Shelby Farms on Setptember 21st, when the women's team finished 6th out of 21 teams in the Rhodes College Invitational 6K event and in the 8Kthe men took 4th in the 8K.
