Eagles Earn Three UAA Athlete of the Week Selections

Emory University had three student-athletes from three different sports selected as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Both freshman golfer Ellen Dong and senior second baseman Zeke Diamond were chosen as Athletes of the Week for the first time in their careers while senior pitcher/first baseman Mattie Ryan earned her third weekly honor this season and fourth of her career.

Dong was named the tournament MVP for her performance at the UAA Championships this past weekend. Dong played at the No. 1 position and won both of her matches to lead the women's golf team to their first-ever UAA Championship in the team's first appearance at the Championship. In Dong's matchup against NYU she won in a 1 UP decision before winning her finals match against Carnegie Mellon by a score of 3 & 2.

Diamond paced the Eagles with eight hits across the week as the baseball team went 2-1 against Piedmont and #3 Birmingham-Southern. Diamond collected multi-hit efforts in all three games including back-to-back three-hit games in the doubleheader sweep of the Lions on Sunday. He topped the offense in on-base and slugging percentage, total bases (10) including two doubles while scoring four runs and drove in one. In addition, Diamond drew one walk and had two stolen bases.

Ryan was her usual efficient self in the circle, pitching two complete game shutouts to lead softball to a 3-1 mark at home against Covenant and LaGrange. In her three appearances, Ryan had a combined ERA of 0.53 as she gave up just a single earned run in 13.1 innings of work. In her last start of the weekend against LaGrange, Ryan went for a career high seven strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. On top of her outstanding showing as a pitcher, Ryan had an equally impressive effort at the plate as she finished the weekend with a team-leading seven RBI including a three-run blast to left in the first game against Covenant on Friday.
