Emory Athletics Weekly Preview - March 14th - 20th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for March 14th – March 20th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

Swimming & Diving:

For the first time since 2019, the Emory University men's and women's swimming & diving teams will compete at the NCAA Division III Championships as the 2022 nationals are set to take place later this week starting on Wednesday, March 16th and going through Saturday, March 19th.

This year's NCAA DIII Championships will be held in Indianapolis, IN where it will be hosted by Franklin College as well as the Indiana Sports Corporation. The women's team looks to win their 11th consecutive national championship and 13th overall as they come into this year's championships tied with Kenyon as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation in the latest CSCAA poll. The men's team comes into this year's championship with 20 straight top-five finishes and have claimed back-to-back national runner-up finishes after winning their first-ever national title in 2017. Preliminaries will start at 10 AM with the finals sessions to follow at 6 PM each day.

The women's national team roster consists of seniors Edie Bates, Cailen Chinn, Allie Dixon, Clio Hancock, Taylor Leone, Josie Uerling, Zoe Walker, juniors Sarah Byers, Allie MacMillan, Caroline Maki, Savannah Sowards, sophomores Fiona Arwood, Sloane Donovan, Penelope Helm, Megan Jungers, Sammie Kass, Tess Klugherz and freshmen Jada Chatoor and Arianna Khan with Leaya Ma serving as an alternate.

The men's national team roster features seniors Sean Byman, Jason Hamilton, Colin LaFave, Hwa Min Sim, juniors Lucas Bumgarner, Will O'Daffer, Pat Pema, Lawrence Redmond, Ryan Soh, sophomores Adam Copses, Logan D'Amore, Ryan Gibbons, Nicholas Goudie, Jake Meyer and freshmen Jeff Echols, Alexander Pollack, Crow Thorsen and Dylan Yin with Zachary Zhao acting as an alternate.

Baseball:

Coming off a successful 2-0 outing this weekend against Piedmont University, the Emory University baseball team (11-7) returns to action this weekend with a three-game series against the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe (6-7). Emory holds a dominant 52-20 all-time series record over Oglethorpe with their last game being won by the Eagles in a decisive 17-7 contest in 2019. Senior Zeke Diamond had an outstanding week this past week going 8-for-15 at the plate with two extra-base hits and four runs as well as two stolen bases.

Softball:

After a successful 3-1 weekend against USA South foes Covenant and LaGrange, the Emory University softball team (8-6) will continue its 12-game homestand with two more against the Webster Gorloks (3-1 as of Monday) this Friday and Saturday with one game each afternoon, marking the first-ever meetings between the schools.

Senior Mattie Ryan has been phenomenal all season for the Eagles as she continued on her torrid pace this weekend. Ryan had a team-high seven RBI and accrued a 2-1 record in the circle as she pitched two complete game shutouts and had a miniscule 0.53 ERA over her three appearances.

Track & Field:

After finishing up the indoor season at the NCAA DIII Indoor Championships last weekend, the Emory University track & field teams will begin its outdoor season this weekend as it plays host to the Emory Spring Break Classic on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19. There will be 31 teams competing in the meet with the first event on Friday scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM and the first event Saturday slated for a 10:00 AM start.

Men's Golf:

Coming off of its fifth consecutive UAA Championship, the men's golf team will compete in the Jekyll Island Collegiate this weekend. The 54-hole event will be played over three days on the 6,551-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, GA.

Competing for the Eagles this weekend are senior Max Schwarz, senior Logan Ryan, senior Davis Hingtgen, sophomore Michael Rosenbloom, junior Jackson Klutznick, freshman Josh Qian, freshman Michael Burry and freshman Tony Li.

The Eagles come into this tournament ranked No. 1 in the nation after defeating NYU 3-2 in their match-play format contest in the UAA Championship final. Ryan, Li and Rosenbloom each earned victories for the Eagles in the final and were tabbed to the All-Tournament Team.

Women's Golf:

After winning its first-ever UAA Championship in just its second full year as a program, the Emory University women's golf team will return to action this weekend at the Jekyll Island Collegiate. The three day, 54-hole tournament will be played on the 5,600-yard, par-72 Indian Mound Course at Jekyll Island, GA.

The Eagles come into this tournament ranked No. 2 in the nation after defeating No. 1 ranked Carnegie Mellon in the final of the UAA Championship. Emory won by a 3-2 decision in the match-play format contest with the Eagles wins coming from freshman Ellen Dong, sophomore Irene Wang and freshman Sharon Mun. For her efforts at the tournament, Dong was named as the tournament MVP.

Competing for the Eagles will be the group of Dong, Wang, Mun, Heejo Hyun and Mariana Chong as well as Jessica Lan as an individual.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team rides a four-match winning streak into the Stag-Hen Invitational in Claremont, CA this weekend. The Eagles (4-4) will face-off against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Friday at 12:00 PM EST in the first round of action.

Emory holds an all-time series record of 11-0 over the Sagehens with their most recent bout a 6-3 victory in the Eagles favor in 2016. The other six teams that make up the remainder of the field are Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Amherst, Bowdoin, WashU, Trinity and Gustavus Adolphus. The second round of play will take place at 6:00 PM EST on Friday with the final scheduled for 1:00 PM EST on Saturday.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team looks to bounce back as it returns home this weekend with two matches against strong opponents. The Eagles (3-4) will face-off against the Texas-Dallas Comets (4-1) at 3:00 PM on Friday before matching up against Division II foe Columbus State (4-4) at 1:00 PM on Sunday. This will be the first ever matchup between the Eagles and the Comets while Emory and Columbus State are knotted up at three matches apiece  in the all-time series with the Eagles emerging victorious in their most recent matchup in 2019 by a score of 4-3.
