Six Eagles Named as UAA Athletes of the Week

For the second time in a month the Eagles garnered six University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week awards, tying for the most in a single week during the 2021-22 athletic calendar.

Swimming and Diving led the way this week as seniors Taylor Leone, Jason Hamilton and Lucas Bumgarner were chosen as AOW recipients while men's and women's golf saw freshman Sharon Mun and senior Logan Ryan sweep the conference honors. Senior Bella Racette highlighted track & field honors, picking up the women's track award following the first outdoor weekend of the spring.

Hamilton and Bumgarner helped the Emory men's team to its second national title this past week in Indianapolis.

Hamilton competed in five events across the four days and captured the team's lone individual event championship as he successfully defended his national title in the 200 Breaststroke. He aided the men's 800 Freestyle Relay team to the national title as well, swimming the third leg as the Eagles broke the Division III record at 6:28.69. In addition, he earned All-America honors in the 100 Breast (3rd - 53.49) and was part of Emory's 7th-place 400 Medley Relay (3:13.48). Bumgarner finished among the top-three divers in both events as he was the national runner-up in the 3-meter event with score of 557.65 before taking third in the 1-meter at 523.70.

For Leone, she led the Emory University women's swimming & diving team to a national runner-up finish at the meet in Indianapolis. Leone won the 50 Freestyle national championship with a time of 22.72 and was third in both the 100 Butterfly (set school record in prelims at 54.14) and 100 Freestyle (50.25). She was also a member of four relays that finished either first or second in their respective event, swimming the lead off leg on the national championship winning 400 Freestyle Relay (3:20.86) and was part of national runner-up relays in the 200 Freestyle (1:30.44 - under previous DIII record), 400 Medley (3:38.38 - under previous DIII record) and 200 Medley (1:39.89 - under previous DIII record).

Mun powered the women's golf team to the largest ever margin of victory at the Jekyll Island Collegiate this past weekend. Mun posted a three-round score of 211 (69-72-70) which saw her finish with the second best score at the tournament. Mun's score of 211 sits as the best three-round score by any individual in program history. Mun helped lead the Eagles to a 29-stroke lead over the second place, in a field that consisted of 13 team ranked within the WGCA Top 25 Poll.

Ryan posted the fourth best three-round score in program history to help lead the men's golf team to a third place finish at the Jekyll Island Collegiate. Ryan carded a 210 (70-69-71) which saw him finish tied for sixth at the tournament. Ryan led all individuals at the tournament on Par 4 holes shooting a combined five-under par on those holes. Ryan helped the Eagles finish in third place as they outperformed conference foes Carnegie Mellon (5th), Rochester (7th) and NYU (20th).

Racette had a tremendous showing for the women's track & field program at the team's hosted Spring Break Classic. On Friday Racette posted a new personal best time of 4:46.44 to win the 1,500m run before participating on the 4x800 relay team on Saturday that finished in second place with a time of 10:00.40. Racette's performance in the 1,500m run sees her in first in the conference and eighth in the nation according to TFRRS.

This marks the fifth weekly award for Bumgarner and the 16th of his career. For Leone, it is her third weekly honor of the season as well as her career and for Mun, it is her second AOW of her rookie season. Ryan picks up his first weekly award of the season and is now a five-time winner in his career. As for Hamilton and Racette, this is the first career weekly honor for both athletes in their careers.
